Bailie George Meek,Kirkcudbright,Murder
« on: Thursday 15 October 09 20:09 UTC (UK) »

Anything known of the story of the murder of Bailie George Meek, Kirkcudbright on 5th Sep' 1694, as  briefly mentioned in the Kirkcudbright website. A George Meek, merchant, married an Isobel Anderson in Edinburgh on 16th Sep' 1642 and it is probably the same George Meek who appears on a List of Disorderly persons (Covenanters) in the Parish of Borgue in 1684. In 1637 he signed the protest against the introduction of the English Book of Common Prayer, addressed to Charles I.......Skoosh.

Hi Skoosh,

Is this the story to which you refered? http://www.old-kirkcudbright.net/pages/rambles2.asp

Have you seen the other mention of him from 1684 - an article entitled " Ructions at the fair" ?
http://www.old-kirkcudbright.net/papers/fairs.asp

You appear to be correct in your assumption about Isobel, as she is listed as his relict, not sure about the year though?
http://www.archive.org/stream/scottishrecordso18scotuoft/scottishrecordso18scotuoft_djvu.txt

There is supposed to be an entry about a George Meek in Kirkcudbright in 1697 in the Sheriff Court Deeds held by the NAS (according to a post on Rootsweb)

The article I posted above does not state that he was killed by the attack. The attack in August of 1684 was similar in description, and then he was sent to Edinburgh to report on it.

Do you have confirmation of his death?

Interesting sites Kirsty, the first I read said that he was "asassinat" which I took to mean killed. Did these Meek's come from Edinburgh originally I wonder? There is also a John Meek mentioned, a mason who built the Tongland Bridge & Moat Brae Church, came from Perthshire! any further info on him?  Thanks....Skoosh.

Do you have a link to that first site? It sounds interesting.

I have seen mention of another George Meek, also an Alexander Meek, both Burgesses of Kirkcaldy, and their families. I've not come across John Meek much as yet, but then i was only looking for George...

There is something in the NAS catalogue about this George Meek, Skipper Burgess.

Kirsty, it's just on page 2 of rambles in Galloway, the Kirkcaldy Meek's were shipowners I believe, and I found Fred's site last year, very good too....Cheers....Skoosh.

I must have missed the "assasinat" bit when I first read it. An interesting use of language that they used the french spelling of the word rather than the english.

Kirsty, before the Union of 1707  Scots spelling and grammar were used, I believe the first time an English non-conformist preacher was heard in Edinburgh the folk were convulsed with laughter and thought it preposterous!.....Skoosh.
