'The Disappearance'
« on: Friday 08 August 08 12:05 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

Levi Edgar Hicock, b. 1852, Leeds County, Ontario, Canada went as a single young man to Chicago.  A family member refers to it as 'the disappearance' because except for one letter no one heard from him again as far as we know.

In Sept. 1887 he sent a letter home with his name spelled Heacock.  He was then in Omer, Aramac, Michigan and promised to come home the next year if possible.

I have searched for information but found nothing.  If he returned to Canada, would there be some record of his trip?

Your help will be appreciated.

Regards,

Kathleen

The place in Michigan is Omer, Arenac County, Michigan.

Unfortunately in the 1880s border crossing records weren't kept.  The Arenac County Historical Society might be able to suggest records that could show him passing through.

My thanks for your reply and my apology re spelling.

I've tried to find whether he died in Michigan, but so far no luck.  Could you suggest anything that might help with that?

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html has some Michigan birth/marriage/death records, but I don't see him there. (possible the name has been mangled?).

There is an 1884 and a 1894 Michigan state census but not sure if they have been indexed. Parts of Arenac appear to have belonged in Bay or Saginaw counties at various times, to make things more complicated.

Thanks again.

I have seen numerous spellings of the name, so will take a look at the link you gave.
