I am going to visit my great aunt in 2 weeks, in Castlefields.
I was wondering if some of the streets and churches I want to see would see be there?
St Mary's Church Preston Gubbals.
Atcham Reg Office ( wedding was in 1920's)
Canal Building, St Mary.
House Court, St Austins

Im born and bred here in Shrewsbury, and I served my apprentiship with a firm in Castle fields, ( a long time ago  ) , Its like all of us though when you live in a place you never take much notice of there addresses, even since I was a kid Castlefields has suffered the effects of the bulldozer in the name of ( progress ),
I live on the monkmoor side of the river, so on your visit when you see the wier from the C/Fs side that is what I used to walk across in the mornings to get to work, As kids we used to go to your side of the wier and catch the salmon as they fell on the side as they was trying to jump the wier, nowadays they have special tunnels , I do hope you enjoy your visit to our town,

Hi Pete,
I haven't been back to Shrewsbury since my nan's funeral in 1991
She was a Shrewsbury girl, as were her parents, grandparents, g grandparents and so on!!!
She moved to London at 16, hence why we are all Londoners, but she moved back their in later life.
I love Shrewsbury, and the Tudor buildings.
I hope it hasn't changed too much 
My dad also went to school there, nan sent her children during WW2.
My great Gran's family run the Refreshments Rooms at Shrewsbury Railway Station. That is where she met my great grandfather, who was a Scottish Solider, he was killed in WW1, before nanny was born
The areas my family and ancestors were from are Castlefields, St Mary Atcham, Battlefield, Preston Gubbals, St Chad.
There was a marriage in 1860, at The Register Office, Shrewsbury, I would love to find out exactly where it was.
And another in the Register Office in 1919.
I think Derfold Street is still there, and am off to check the addresses now.

If you are walking from the castlefields side come past the prison, and cross the dana bridge over the railway at the end of the bridge on your right you will see some steps, dont go down these keep following the wall of the castle till you come to some more steps, go down these and the archives are slightly to your right on the other side of the road, not sure about opining times, I know they are shut one day of the week but I cant remember which one, might be worth giving theam bell,

P.S give us a shout if you want a look up for any of your Turners in the Litchfield diocese pre ab 1820ish The largest clusters of the surname I can see is around Edgmond, and the Tibberton areas,

Thanks for the directions. I will telephone them before I go.
I go Monday and now London Transport are going to on strike Monday!! 
My Turners were from Atcham, (St Mary) Castlefield, St Chad, Roddington, Uffington.
I went back to John Turner b. 1802 Roddington, Married to Mary Stokes b.1810.
They had a son called Thomas Turner b.1829, Uffington.
I have just been searching for more Turners on the Family Search Site.

A word of warning re the archives...
On a Tuesday night they shut at 9pm
The multi storey car park nearby shuts at 8pm
The out of hours phone-us-to-get-your-car-back helpline finds your call terribly important but never actually gets around to answering it!
I ended up having to get a bus back to my hotel and collect my car next morning!
PS. The Shropshire archives are closed on Mondays

Hi Danae,
I arrive on Monday, so I will have to go Tuesday.
That's if I have enough time now, as that is the day will are having a family reunion.
Lots of aunts and cousins to meet, and some new additions I have never met before.
Maybe Weds, as my train isn't until later.

You may want to book a microfiche reader for Tues evening, you can always ring and cancel it if you can't get there.
They are also very helpful at looking things up and copying and posting them to you.

Hi alveyhistorian.
Ah that's how they do it a the Mitchell Library in Glasgow, about £1.00 a copy.
At the places I visit in London you do it yourself it's about 25p if you have a card, and 35p cash.
At least it will be quicker if they do it 
Yes I my HB pencils ready, a note book and all the certs and census I need for reference.
I will have fun!!
