Barberry Family - Pembroke Dock
« on: Saturday 09 August 08 15:24 UTC (UK) »

Is anyone else researching this family name? I'm interested in finding out more of the origins of the name, the family of John and Frances (m Pembroke 1839) and any of their children Martha (b 1840) Mary Ann (b 1842) William George (b 1844) Frances (b 1845) James (b1848) and John Richard (b 1851)
Thanks

I see Devonport was mentioned, many men (and families) moved from Devonport to Pembroke Dock ( http://www.pembrokedock.org/h_dockyard_2.htm  ) to find work.

Just to add there are a few on GR who are researching Barberry in Devon, John 1817.  Also his family in b Pembroke.  Nothing on Ances**y world tree

There is also possible siblings of John in the Pembroke area 1841 working as servants, James Barberry c 1827 and Thomas Barbary c 1826 both b Pembroke.

1841 - HO107 Piece 1451 Book 3 has John & Frances with the Powell family, George & Frances which is very possibly her parents and siblings.

Batch C081801

FRANCES POWELL
Christening:  07 MAR 1817   Saint Michaels, Pembroke, Pembroke, Wales
Father:  GEORGE POWELL Mother:  FRANCES

Parish Marriage:

George Powell (lab) of St Mary, married Frances Barnet (widow) of St Michael, 29 Jan 1814, Pembroke

Hope this helped

Another interesting fact.... is Martha Douglas who is with the family in 1841 looks like to have married in Devon, and is possibly very likely daughter of  Frances snr, her first son William, is b out of county.  They are next door to same family in 1851, with grandson William Douglas.

MARTHA BARNETT  - Spouse:  WILLIAM DOUGLAS
Marriage:  12 FEB 1836   Stoke Damerel, Devon

Batch No - M052421

Hi Cas
You've been busy ... you unearthed more in 24 hours than I have managed in a year and a half!
I'm so grateful for the information and the names of John's siblings. I had managed to track down his marriage on bmd site but the record is incomplete (Frances does not have a surname) so I have written off for a copy of the original.
I was also confused (not difficult sadly) about Martha Douglas. I assumed she was a relative of Frances but couldn't find any more trace of her.
I will try Devonshire site and see what I can find out. Your help is much appreciated. Thanks again.

This I suspect is the marriage...obviously, having transcribed for freebmd, there is a discrepancy in the reg...will check original for hopefully correct number it is either going to be '8' or '2' as the correct digit.  BRB

Marriages Sep 1839

BARBERRY  John    Pembroke  26 241

Marriages Sep 1839

Powell  Frances    Pembroke  26 841

The numbers are as transcribed on the Freebmd index.  Only thing I can suggest is there was an error on index register, as they are typed.  Possible not on the original entry  Huh

Possible contacting the register office in Pembroke to find original marriage entry, The GRO numbers do not apply to the local register where marriage took place.

There are also some other bapt for children on the batch number for George & Frances Powell, along with Frances and in 1841 there is a Mary Powell with child, that is possibly a dau or dau in law?

Hi Cas
You were quite correct: the marriage certificate has arrived and John's wife is Frances Powell. The rank/profession of his father (William Barberry) is 'warrant officer'. Any idea if this is Royal Naval or Merchant Navy i.e. would the certificate be more specific if the groom's father was in Royal Navy?
You were also correct about Frances Powell's father. George Powell (labourer)
