I am fairly new to this! My ancestors came from Wheatenhurst, Saul Framilode, Glos. My grandfather was Tom COATES Nicholls born 1886 in Priding Arlingham. His father was also Tom Coates Nicholls. His mother was Mary Ann COOK. I have been unable to get back any further but note on the census returns that there are lots of Nicholls in the area with COATES as a middle name so assume that one of the ancestors maiden names was COATES. Also, COOK keeps turning up as a middle name in the Nicholls family so assume that is after the maiden name of Mary Ann. Can anyone shed any light on this? ALso, how does the look up work? I would like to find the Tom Coates NIcholls that was father to the one born in 1886 (husband to Mary Ann Cook) but as I live in Spain this is proving difficult. The men in the family were mariners and seem to have been away at all the census times. Any help would be appreciated as I have come to a dead end. Found lots of probables but no definites. There is a Daniel NIcholls from Framilode with children with middle names Coates and Cook! I think he was probably brother to my Tom Coates.
Thanks

Hi Shonagh
I have searched Wheatenhurst on the 1861 census - this looks like your family -
Joseph Nichols, head, mar, 39, Waterman, Kings Stanley Glos. Elizabeth, wife, 30, Saul Glos. William, son, 7, Scholar, Saul Glos. Tom, son, 5, Scholar, Saul Glos. Daniel, son,3, Saul Glos.
PRO REF: RG9/1770 Parish of Saul Ecclesiastical District: Framilode No of Schedule:33 Folio: 6 Page: 5
William Coates, head, mar, 70, Formerly a Waterman, Arlingham Glos. Sophia, wife, 60, Saul Glos. Emily Nichols, Grand dau, 12, Scholar, Visitor, Saul Glos. Hannah Nichols, Grand dau, 10, Scholar, Visitor, Saul Glos.
PRO REF: RG9/1770 Parish of Saul Ecclesiastical District: Framilode No of Schedule:37 Folio: 6 Page:6
Lucky they had the grandchildren visiting!
James Cook, head, mar, 50, Inn Keeper and Waterman, Kings Stanley Glos Mary A,. wife, 52, Arlingham Glos. Agusta, dau, 13, Scholar, Saul Glos. Paul, son, 10, Scholar, Saul Glos. Mary A., dau, 7, Scholar, Saul Glos.
PRO REF: RG9/1770 Parish of Saul Ecclesiastical District: Framilode Road, Street &c: Epney No of Schedule: 58 Folio: 8/9 Page: 10/11
Hope this helps. Regarding method for lookup. Just post a message under Gloucestershire Lookup Requests ( at top of page on main Gloucestershire board). Give as much information as possible - approx. age, occupation, place of birth. Also which area you would like searched and which census.
Good Luck

Thank you very much for this - I got your e-mail today but it seems that you posted a reply last week.
The Nicholls family is the correct one as is the information on the Coates family. The Cook family I think is closely related (they are living next door to my Mary Ann on later census BUT the older Mary Ann shown on the 1861 census with dtr Mary Ann is not the same one. This particular daughter, Mary Ann, is shown living with her mother and she never married and the other Mary Ann Nicholls (Cook) is next door so I'm still stuck. I think my Mary Ann Cook's mother is Sarah (but I can't find her father). Sarah is also mother to Daniel Nicholls' wife.
I'm very grateful to you. If you find anything else (maybe a husband for Sarah) I'll be pleased to receive it.
Thanks again - I thought I'd never find a reference to Tom Coates Nicholls!

Looking for those pesky elusive ancestors !!!

Im an Aussie and dont know the layout of England that well.
Bearing that in mind, My GGGGrandfather Wiliam Kelk married a Mary Coates in about 1818 in Lincolnshire, probably around Burgh-le-Marsh. Dont know if this is even close or related.
Good luck. Robert

I have come in rather late to this, but I was wondering whether you have seen later censuses or not?
There is a George NICHOLS 7 son on board a vessel named after his son (?) the "Seamore William", in Lydney at 1881 census. Father born c 1826 and son c 1869. Any chance he is Sarah's missing husband?
Can find more including 1871 if you need it.
kind regards
