Hi ya Sue, Pat and all  Smiley

The building shown looks very very similar to a picture of a building in Ballingdon Street I took last year,  it has BEAULEIU on the Column out the front,  similar style of building and brick....would be very interested if any RC's would know how old these style of buildings are.....purely to find out if my Ancestor was born there..... in 1850.

If you need to look at the picture,  let me know.

Good luck yvorbiggun  Cheesy

The building you mention keeweegal, was home to one of my daughters friends in tap dancing school days  Cheesy

I never went inside, though I would have liked to - many of these buildings were built as you see them, but many that look like that, have had a new 'modern' front put on and behind the facade is a timber framed earlier building (in Lavenham and Clare such buildings have new fronts from the early 1800s and behind are timber framed buildings from the 1500s).

Ballingdon suffers from being the main route out of Sudbury to Essex.  As far as I can remember we have petitioned for a southern by-pass.

Ballingdon has such beautiful buildings, you really need to walk through on a Sunday and make sure you look up as well.

I do have a book on Sudbury that mentions some of the heritage buildings and whether they were built by Grimwood etc etc I will have a quick look later to see if any mention of Beaulieu.

The building on East Street that Sue photographs has been offices in recent years (I think the East Anglian Daily Times for Sudbury was there for a while).

Don't forget a lot of these buildings can be seen in their former glory on the Sudbury Archive Photographic site at

Hi ya Pat,   Thanks for the tit bits about Ballingdon.....my husband and I spent quite a few hours nosing around there...what a shame it's so busy with traffic.  Cry

Quite a lovely part of the world nonetheless.

Merry Xmas to you all over there  Grin Grin Grin
