Hi, just spotted this thread and have had a look using 'replies' button (I too didn't know about that one' and it is surprising the number of replies (one reply) where there is an actual answer to the question but the author has failed to reply with a thank you (I know that has subject has been covered many time before as well) Joyce still busy looking a 'replies'

Yes I used to take the time to notify people by p.m. that they have a reply, just in case notification is turned off... Some have said that they have p.m.d their thank you or answer...which is nice, too, but we all can't see it...
So I also would p.m. a suggestion to people that a thank you or reply would let people know if the answers were satisfactory...but one reply I got from that was pretty vicious, so I no longer stick my nose in the manners dept. Some people just have none..., but I do still p.m. just in case notification was missed... J.J.

I'm all in favour of sending a reply. Many of the posts that have not received a reply are from first time posters. A reply saying welcome and wishing them good luck may make the poster feel part of the RootsChat community and encourage them to stay on the site instead of posting and leaving the site when it looks as though no reply is going to be received.
There are a variety of replies that you can send ... it depends upon the query but in some instances you may be able to suggest that another post be made on one of the other boards. Newcomers sometimes post on a board which may not be related to their query ... a good example is queries relating to specific families appearing on a Resource board.
Christopher
Yes, Christopher, I agree totally with the above! I don't own resources myself, but a lot of my helping posts are what you describe - directing the poster to another board where they may be much more likely to receive a reply. I always try to remember that I was a newbie once, and that everyone deserves acknowledgement and encouragement as they make a start.

I think it is so nice that there are so many people on here who care...
Mods are really busy, as well..so rather than suggesting a duplicate posting, if you contact the mod & let them know a post needs moving to another board...I'm sure they won't mind the help and will move it to the appropriate board...Their links are made available at the top of the boards they moderate... Sometimes queries are left unanswered because they are searching for the living...this is a board for seeking ancestors.... I also p.m. a suggestion if they need to modify their subject lines for a better response ... ( or remove full names of the living) This also helps them to learn about p.m's and how to use modify... I use mine too much, perhaps, as I tend to add lots of information to a posting rather than adding new replies... but that's just what I like to do...
Also if you want to show people how to shrink urls in their postings, to avoid the huge scrolling situation.... send them here... http://www.rootschat.com/links/
and like most of you, I came to this site and stayed because I had several other sites where my queries sat and were/are never answered...so I don't think we do all that badly on here...

I thought the report to moderators had another use, as in offensive content, or whatever... If it reports to all moderators and they all go see the same thread, wouldn't we be wasting their time... Each genealogy related Board has a list of moderators above it, so I think using the appropriate one makes sense... Now we need a mod to set us straight on this J.J.
( Bob's on this thread, so we'll let him get the other kind of notification...hehe, sorry Bob...always the newbie, me )

The "Report to Moderator" link only has a very simple explanation when you click on it, Use this function to inform the moderators and administrators of an abusive or wrongly posted message. so I added something here: Topic: Using the "Report to Moderator" link http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,135441.0.html
In general, you will all find a lot of answers to your questions here: Topic: RootsChat Topics: How to use RootsChat / FAQs http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,207046.0.html
