Had a PM from Michael, so adding it to this thread.
My name is Michael dowding and I live in Guernsey, Channel Islands. I've just been fascinated by the story of Hannah's sampler. I believe Hannah must have been my great aunt, sister to my grandmother Eliza who married John Silas Banks Dowding. Has your research told you what became of him? His time and place of death are a mystery to all of his descendants here. I'd be keen to get any info of any Hannah's descendants. And if you've any questions for about Dowdings (I don't know a lot about the Wallops) then fire away!

Mike, just to kick-start this again (couldn't resist)
FreeBMD gives the marriage of Eliza Ann Wallop to John Silas Banks Dowding, June Q 1865, Chippenham (5a 87)

1871 - National School, School House N. Wraxall  RG10/1895/41/21

John S. B. Dowding  29  Builder emp. 15 men               b. Castle Combe
Eliza Ann                 28  School Mistress & organist       b.     ditto
Agnes                       5                                                           ditto
Florence Mary           3                                                    b. North Wraxall
Elizabeth Hannah     11m                                                          ditto
Martha Bence  unm  53  gen. serv.                                           ditto

1881 - N. Wraxall  RG 11/2029/80/7

John Silas Banks Dowding, mar,  builder , boarding at the Shoe Inn.  Perhaps he had one too many & decided to stay over  Cheesy

1881 - N. Wraxall, School House  RG11/2029/82/12

Eliza Ann Dowding  38  School mistress  b. Castle Combe
Agnes                      15                                       ditto
Florence Mary           13                           b. N. Wraxall
Edith Hannah            10                                   ditto
Blanche                      9                                    ditto
Susannah Jane          3                                    ditto
Samuel James            8                                   ditto
Francis John               5                                    ditto
Percy                          3m                                  ditto.

No sign of any of the family members in 1891 or 1901.  Did they follow Hannah's example & go to pastures new?  Perhaps that's why you can't find his death record.

John Silas Banks Dowding, birth reg.  Dec Q 1841, Chippenham  (8 277)

1851 census tells us he was the s/o,
James Dowding  42  Journeyman Mason  b. Nettleton ? Wilts
Eliza Dowding    34                                   b. Castle Combe.

Hope that's given you something to start with,

Interesting.

I am wondering if there could be a distant connection to my ggg grandfather, Worthy Banks, b. 1810 in Castle Combe, son of John Banks and Elizabeth Jones.  Worthy had brothers named John Banks (b. 1804, Castle Combe) and Silas Banks (b. 1821, Castle Combe).

Yes, it looks like Eliza might be a sister.  Worthy Banks had a sister Eliza born 1816 in Castle Combe, so she would have been about 34 in 1851.

The BMD Index has the marriage; June Q 1838, Bath (11 9)
James Dowding,  Eliza Banks shares the same reference numbers & location!
Nothing on the IGI for Eliza's baptism (Castle Combe doesn't seem to be represented) but on FamilyHistory Online
http://www.familyhistoryonline.net/ there is one entry for Eliza Banks, Wilts in 1817.

Thanks Cat and Jane.  I had seen this marriage in Bath before [Worthy went to Bath, too] but wasn't sure if this Eliza Banks was actually the sister of Worthy.  It looks like she probably was since the date and place of birth match up.  I've kind of let Worthy's numerous siblings slide for awhile since I've been pursuing other ancestral lines.  But I think it's time to get back to them.  Most of them I have not been able to trace, but they couldn't all have died young.

Well, here it is, 8 Nov 2008, and I have read this magnificent story for the first time, today.  I joined rootschat just four weeks ago.  I am not a descendant of the lass who made this sampler,

BUT

I wish to congratulate all the people who put the effort into following the clues to find out so much about that lass.

It seems to me that your efforts were as great as those made by Hannah all those decades ago.

I thank you, and assure you that it is a grand effort.

Cheers,

from a NSW born lass, a great grand daughter of Mary Ann Hunt, born Lancs 1853 who migrated (alone) to NZ in 1873, and then settled in NSW in the latter part of the 1870's or early 1880's.

Welcome to Rootschat, ggd of Mary Ann  Smiley
It was fun chasing around in search of clues & I like to think it was our small contribution to history in general & to Hannah & her descendants in particular  Smiley
Here's hoping Rootschatters can help you in your research !!!
