RELATIVE OFF TO AMERICA--WHEN ???
« on: Sunday 11 April 04 11:04 BST (UK) »

Can any members help me please----

My GreatGrandfather went off to America maybe from Bristol Area as he lived around Gloucester between probably 1877---1884--We know he was there in 1884 as he had joined the 5th Cavalry that year

Could somebody help me with a look up or tell me how to go about finding the info

Thankyou

Hi Nigel & Steven
I can try looking for him.  BUT, first I need a name, and age, etc.
Or you can try the Ellis Island Records site, which has names from 1892 - 1924.

Grub

It would be good great if you could help. His name was Harry Bird and he was born 08.03.1860 in Bridgewater Somerset.

His dad George was a policeman from Gloucester.Harry himself was educated in Gloucester.

He did a total of 11 years in the Cavalry before returning to the UK.At the time of his enlistment in 1884 he would be 24.We don't know at what age he left for the US though.

He enlisted in the Royal Fusilers (Legion of Frontiersmen) at the outbreak of WW1 and was killed in what is now Kenya 16.07.1915.

This is all i have (taken from his obituary).Nigel may have some more info.Harry is his Great Grandfather from his Dads side.We share the same great Grandfather from His mothers and my fathers side.

HI GRUB

Thanks for the offer, as you can see Steven has given you the info, also his mothers name was Maria and he may not have been alone, there may have been his brother with him.

We dont know when he came back except he must have been back in England in 1896 to get his wife pregnant, do you have those records of a return passenger aswell

Many Thanks

Hi gents
I found 3 Harry Bird(s)

Arrival date: 8 August, 1885, age 27, left Liverpool, arrived NY on "Germanic

Arrival date: 30 September, 1883, age 22,left Liverpool,
arrived NY on "Helvetia"

Arrival date: 12 April 1880, age 30, left Halifax and London, arrived NY on "California"

Looks like the 1883 might fit your Harry.  There were no other family members with any of these passengers.

Unfortunately, the 1890 US census is not available, it was destroyed, and he would fit right inbetween 1880 and 1900........drats.

I do not have passenger lists returning to the UK.  Wish I did......LOL  The index shows 43 George Bird and 4 Maria (all Maria prior to 1866).

Hope this helps,
Kind regards
Grub

Nigel
Just wanted to remind you that the list only showed NY arrivals.........Harry could possibly have landed at another port, BUT NY was the major POE at that time, so you'll have to draw your own conclusions.  Dates seems right, name seems right, age about right........ I would tend not take it as a given at this point, but rather a high surety level.
Kind regards,
