diary of 1814
« on: Friday 15 August 08 12:52 BST (UK) »

I am slowly putting my GGGGrandfathers diary onto computer. His writing is very small

Rev Joseph Herrick of Colchester writes :
May 26 1814 Dined with Mr J Verlander - very much gratified by a visit to the Distillery, Mr Baird behaved extremely kind -

any ideas which distillery it may have been??

June 9 went to Charty club

Anyone know which this might have been ??

June 16 preched in the evening at the Gift houses - walked up town in the evening to veiw the illuminations, many of them in a style of neatness, such as I have never before witnessed.

What or where were the Gift Houses??

June 22 Received a present from Mrs thorn Junr of a large bowl of jelly for my wife - & 6 bottles of british wine from Mrs Barris

Where were the wine makers in England in 1814 ??

Argentina x

As far as I understand ,Gift Houses were latterly called Alms Houses.
I am off to the Library this afternoon ,will have a look at the Colchester History books and see if I can shed some light on this for you.
At the moment I have this
10 Almshouses Military Road Colchester
Winnocks charity Almshouses in Military Road Colchester were founded in 1678 by clothmaker John Winnock. They are Colchesters oldest almshouses which remain on original site (this dated 2004).
Kendalls Almshouses created by Rev John Kendall and wife Anna in 1791 as an update to Arthur Winsley's 1726 endowment homes for elderly men.

There is also ,Jacob Verlander who lived at Donyland Lodge until at least 1828 ,this property was taken over by a Rev JJ Holyroyd.

The 1874 directory has one distillery in Colchester: Arthur Thomas Cobbold, wine and spirit merchants Culver Street, Colchester.

There is of course, Distillery Lane, which must have in the origin of its name something to do with a Distillery. It led down to the Quays in Colchester.
