hi have had lots of help and really appreciate it,,unfortunately stuck again after having discovered my gt gt gt grandad was born in Ireland after reading 1851census taken in Glasgow,discovered he had a son born in Glasgow 1855 but can find no record of his birth,Iwas hoping if Ifound it I would find where my gt gt gt grandfather was born have tried scotlands people  the son born in Glasgow 1855 was John McNeill on the 1861 census he is aged six someone told me Mitchell library in Glasgow might be able to help does anyone know their webpage.If anyone can help I would appreciate it, all I know at the moment is gt gt gt grandfathers name wasDaniel McNeill married to Mary Darroch both born Ireland Daniels parents were Daniel McNeill and Rachel Luke Marys were James Darroch Jane Keane.Daniel and Mary came to Scotland with five children between 1846 and 1849 thank you Smiley

Finding it very difficult to read the above message without any ounctuation to break it into sentances but I think you found John McNeill in 1861 census age 6 and are assuming he was actually born in 1855. It could be that he was almost seven at the time of the 1861 census which would mean he was really born in 1854 or that the age is incorrect (very common).

Mitchell Library might have records but don't think they will do research for you.
One very good online source is births, marriages and deaths here. Not all parts of the alphabet are there yet but McNeills are:

thanks I realized Johns birth may well have been 1854 and not registered, I knew that if he was born in 1855 it would have been detailed and Iwould have found his parents birthplace,Iwas so excited at finding my gt gt gt grandad on the 1851 census.I live in Kilmarnock not too far away from Glasgow so may take a trip up to mitchell library
