Bedford Marriage
« on: Friday 15 August 08 18:55 BST (UK) »

Please could someone lookup a marriage for Hilda Denton born Bedford 1896, she got married between 1912 and 1916, as all the family seemed to have been married at St Pauls it is possible she did the same.
What I am hoping to find out is the name of her first husband who perished on the Titanic, as my Mother has forgotten it.

Thank you so much for your interest
Best Wishes Bethan

How sure are you of Hilda's birthdate?  The closest to an 1896 birth seems to be this one:

Hilda DENTON Dec 1895 Bedford 3b 309

 - this and other BMDs freely available (though not yet complete) on www.freebmd.org.uk

What was her second husband's name? She would have married him under her first married name

As Anna said, this is all available free on FreeBMD, and we're looking at the same as what you could be looking at!

Hi Tazzie, according to the 1901 census she was 5 years old, so that would make her 17 in 1912, so she would have had to have been married in either 1911 or early 1912, sorry I put 1916 down but for some strange reason I thought that was the year the Titanic sank.
She must have been 16 or 17 when she married, although that seems quite young, it is the norm for my family, as my gran was a great gran by 50.

Thank you so much for your help

Were there any children by the first marriage? If you just put in Denton under mother's maiden name and limit the search 1910-1912 in Bedford registration district you get a list of surnames which may jog someone's memory

The easier way though will be to work backwards from her second marriage, 'cause there ain't no Hilda Denton marriage on FreeBMD that would fit given her age and the date of the sinking of the Titanic. How credible is the story?

Hi David and all, thank you so much for your help.
Hilda was my mothers aunt, my mother can remember visiting Hilda as a teenager and seeing a huge model of the Titanic in a glass case on her sideboard, and being told about the loss of her husband who was a purser on the Titanic.
My Grandmother who was also sister-in-law to Hilda also mentioned this story to me many times, apparently they had not been married long when he died.
As for Hilda's second marriage, unfortunately my mother has forgotten that name as well, she only remembers that it was a short name, so not much help there either!
I have checked FreeBDM without any luck, I am now going to try the Titanic website for Wallace Darlow just in case there is a mistake anywhere with the dates.

Thank you again for all your help

  Hi Bethan .....

No Wallace Darlow on ships crew . Also there are births of Darlow children mothers maiden name Denton in Bedford through to 1921.
The Denton here is Hilda Blanche Denton.

Did your Hilda have any children from either marriage?

Pursers on board ship are ...Hugh Walter McElroy age 37
                                              Reginald Barker age 40
both give Southampton as home town.

Hi Tazzie, thank you again for your help.
I also checked the Titanic site without any luck.
Hilda did not have any family so the Hilda Blanche must be the wrong one.
I will have to have a think to find another way of approaching this puzzle.
Thank you again for all your effort on my behalf.

Very Best Wishes Bethan

Both died in the sinking of the Titanic; Hugh was married to a Barbara, and Reginald was unmarried.

Thanks a lot AVM,
I have checked the crew list from a different angle, on the site that I used the place of birth of the crew members was given.
THere were only two from Bedford, Frederick Allen and Cecil Jackson, I thought that maybe she had married a local chap, I checked FreeBMD again, but unfortunately my hunch did not work.
Thank you anyway for your help, you have all been very kind.
