Need Help Again - Please Saving to Disc (Now Sorted)
« on: Saturday 16 August 08 12:01 BST (UK) »

I need a bit of technical help again please.

On my 'Family Tree Genealogy Suit' program I have the grand total of 3 individuals and after my unfortunate happening in July I need to know how to save the information to a disc -

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,314664.0.html

I thought I would sort this out before I add too many names onto it.  There is nothing in the manual about it I suppose they just presume there aren't doughnuts about like me.

I had a list of my programs up and tried to drag the above mentioned one to a disc, but all it gave me was a shortcut to it. Huh

Ideas, suggestions all happily received.

You cannot save the program itself to disc in this manner - the file you save in this way is the data fale saved by the program

for example family historian uses gedcom files and the file could be called something like ewan.ged.

personal ancestral file uses paf as its main file so the file would be called something like ewan.paf (that said most genealogy programs will also export a gedcom file)

There are a number of free backup programs available and many commercial ones it may be worthwhile checking out if any of these suit your needs

Firstly, have the computer specialists stated that they were unable to recover your data from your old hard drive?

Although you are concerned about losing your data, I would not bother backing up your data to an external source after only 3 entries.  Bear in mind that this an 'extra backup operation.'  Your data is being continuously backed up to your hard drive.

As a general rule you should be able to perform a backup by clicking on File and then Backup within your family tree program.  You then select your CD drive as the backup location.

All family tree programs use database technology which means they automatically save everything all of the time.  You do not have to select File and then Save like you do with other programs like Word or Excel for instance.

Okay ......... The computer specialist have said that the procedure can take up to 6 weeks, so I am still waiting for that, I thought I would take  the opportunity to try and save what I had (3 entries) onto an external source so that eventually when it is built up I can do it without any problems.

When I first realised there was nothing on the disc that I thought should contain my family tree I contacted the manufacturers of the program this is a little of what they said regarding saving information.

"Your tree information will have been saved to your hard drive.  Hopefully you still have access to your old hard drive, or you have saved the information from it somewhere.  The file name that you are looking for ends in .GFT.

I have gone into my file containing my 3 entries right clicked (send to DVD RW) it is now appearing on my 'view files' on the CD I have put in.  I am clicking on my file now and there is a message saying 'file type unknown'

So, I just don't know what's going on.

For the pure hell of it I put in a memory stick and tried again to save family tree to it.  The icon, again is appearing on the memory stick as it was the  CD but there is a message which says 'ewan.gft is not a valid win32 application'

Go into Folder Options in Control Panel.

Click on the View Types tab.

The list of file types is in alphabetical order.

See if there is an entry for the filetype GFT.

If not then click the Add button.  Also specify which program opens that file.

As a general rule you would not normally open a backup file by double clicking on it.  You could right click the file on the DVD and select Open With and select the appropriate program.

If your family tree program has been properly installed then Windows should know how this filetype is opened, so something is wrong.

Hello downside, thanks for the suggestions.

Followed your recent instructions, but there was no Add button Huh

I am using Vista in case this makes any difference.

What I need is someone that actually uses the same family history program to see what comes up on screen for them.

My mistake, it should be the NEW button rather than ADD.

I have clicked on the view types tab within folder options and there is nothing  that mentions new buttons,  Huh I'll keep hunting.

Being adventurous I went into Default Program and then Associate a file type or protocol with a program and there I found a list with all file endings, amongst them was - .ged with a current default of FTREE, .gft also with a current default of FTREE.

Ewan

I have also looked at the manual again for the program -

Export for CD To export a file to copy onto a CD open a window containing the whole or part of the tree you want to use and click on the Export for CD button.  A text window will open asking you to give a file name, some information on the file, and the style that you want the layout to look like, and then click on OK.  The files will be saved to the location given in the box, or to you preferred location, ready to be copied onto a CD using your CD authoring software.

Does anyone know is this what I need,  Export for CD?  It also mentions the files will be saved in .html format.

This is another way for your program to save the information for you BUT it is not possible to directly load this information back into the program - its the equivalent of creating a new set of back up notes of your information.

The general options which would save you from retyping all of the information are

1. the programs data file e.g. ewan.gft

2. a gedcom file either as a native format or as an exported file (sometimes save as file) e.g. ewan.ged

I have found someone that  uses the same family tree program as me, and they have given me specific instructions on how to save to a disc or similar.  In the end it was a simple thing just to click on an option saying ' Export as  Gedcom' and the rest is history as they say.  However, there was a slight hiccup when I clicked on the file showing on my disc and it brought up a page with no buttons showing along the toolbar and with a heading of three question marks.   After uninstalling and installing the program as instructed by the manual for this problem but with still no joy, I opened the file within the family tree program.   Hey presto there was my tree with my 3 entries on it.  Easy when you know how, I just didn't know how!!!!

Thanks again to you both for your interest and suggestions.
