Is there a kind soul who lives close enough to Stanton Drew to check a memorial in the churchyard please. I hope to get there in the next 6 months or so, but if possible I would love to have confirmation of an inscription sooner.
It has been described as an obelisk:
"In loving memory of George Rogers who died May 15th 1889 aged 74......"
Lower down it may have:
"Also in memory of Phoebe Isabella Rogers Granddaughter of George & Phoebe Rogers Who was drowned in the Avon, Bath...."
I would like confirmation that it does say "granddaughter" & not "daughter"

I live 10 miles from Stanton Drew so I can go over for you, but I'll probably wait until my children are back at school in a couple of weeks, if that's okay.

Thank you so much for your kind offer - there is certainly no rush - I'm sure you'll need a rest after the summer holidays!

Fortunately my husband and children are tolerant of my obsession hobby so we stopped by on our way out to the coast today!
Unfortunately the batteries in my camera made this a good time to decide to run out (they were only put in yesterday too ) so the pictures I've taken aren't brilliant quality as I had to use my mobile phone.
Anyway, to confirm what you wished to know, the inscription reads 'daughter' and not 'granddaughter'.
IN LOVING MEMORY OF PHOEBE ISABELLA ROGERS BELOVED DAUGHTER OF GEORGE AND PHOEBE ROGERS WHO WAS DROWNED IN THE AVON AT BATH BY THE CAPSIZING OF A BOAT JULY 6 1888 AGED 19 YEARS
"In the midst of life we are in death"
I've cobbled together a picture for you from three smaller ones I took - it doesn't line up but gives you an idea of what it looks like. I've also attached a picture of the entire obelisk.

I took quite a few photos (some of the church) - if you're interested, they're here...

You might need to go to page 2 or 3 to find them!
I'm not sure if you need this or not, but there is a plaque on the opposite side to the one about the drowning.
IN MEMORY OF GEORGE ROGERS SOUTH AFRICA AIR FORCE KILLED IN ITALY APRIL 7 1944 No other info about this person.
There is also a headstone next to the obelisk which contains more 'Rogers' inscriptions, if you're interested?
Please feel free to save and keep any of the photographs, if you wish.

Dear Janet
Thank you so much for the super photos & information. It certainly clears up the question of Phoebe Isabella's parentage - I took the original details of the insciption from a message posted on another forum (!) & only doubted them when I applied for her birth certificate. I hope to go to Stanton Drew myself one day (a bit down my list of priorities as only the mother - Phoebe Ann is my direct ancestor, and she's buried in Lancashire), so seeing all the monuments is fabulous - I'm not sure how the other Rogers fit into the family (apart from George, who was Phoebe Ann's husband).
Thanks once again for taking the trouble
Steve

Janet,
I've just tried to view the photos in Photobucket, but a password is required - do I need to open an account or is this a private password for your albums only?

For some reason, the album setting was on 'Private' (I don't remember changing it!) - I've made it 'Public' so fingers crossed it should work now.

Please let me know if it's still not working and I'll have a regig when we get home tonight.
ETA: It's a beautiful church (if you like that sort of thing and do get an opportunity to visit) and we were pleasantly surprised to find it unlocked!

Thanks again Janet - that's done the trick!
It does look a lovely church - i must bring my visit forward - I do have other ancestors from the Chew Magna area, so if I can persuade my OF to tramp round a few more graveyards......
