shenton family caverswall dilhorne area any help appreciated!
« on: Saturday 16 August 08 17:14 BST (UK) »

Hi everyone
Wondering if anyone could help me, I am researching my family tree and have traced my family to the Shenton family of Caverswall - Enoch Shenton married Jane Hunt in 1866 at St Edwards Cheddleton they had 3? children but unusually I have found Jane Shenton as she was then living with her parents on the 1871 census but no Enoch with her she had one child with her at the time, she then appears on the 1891 census along with her father (Joseph Hunt) and her three children Stephen 18, Emma 15, Joseph 29 but again no Enoch Shenton present - can't find any records of him anywhere in the census or death records - I am very puzzled can anyone help me at all!
Any help greatly appreciated

Hi Carly,

You do have the family in 1881, I suppose?

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=uki1881&indiv=try&h=19110768
RG11/2721 79 3

In 1871, Enoch is in service at Cheddleton and in 1891, Jane is shown as a widow.

There's a possible death for Enoch:
Enoch Shenton age 42
Mar 1887 Cheadle 6b 205 (or 265?)
Staffordshire bmd (http://www.bmsgh.org/staffsbmd/index.html) shows the death in the sub-district of Dilhorne

Hi, I don't know if you have already done this but I googled 'enoch shelton' and the first hit is a family tree that looks like yours.

Also you could try the wishfull thinking site at Genuki and have a look for memorial inscriptions.  I have visited Cheddleton Churchyard and know that there were a lot of Sheltons buried there.

Good luck
