Registration district as above for GRO birth ref's, which can be found http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ there are quite a few, which could be him.
Possibly writing to the local office and ask for check against mother's name would be less expensive, and also obtain correct one, normally they do not charge if they cannot find what you seek.

Do you want to go back...see if I can find them, or are you ok, don't want to take the fun out of your chase?

I believe some parts are missing for 1861, not sure if those included are in the area for your kin, but cannot seem to find them...

I'm stumped by poor William, he's obviously illegitimate, and perhaps even not registered, it seems that none of the entries fit the bill for him. My thoughts at the moment are that Hannah whom I presumed was his mother, was actually his aunt - there was a family legend that he was brought up by his aunt. If so, I'm bang on still with his Grandfather, but obviously still looking for any records of his birth.
Not only is William Owen a common name in 1870 for a baby, but I've now got a long list of possible mothers:
Martha Owen b abt 1832 Anne Owen b. abt 1834 Jane Owen b. abt 1837 Elin Owen b. abt. 1838 Ellen / Elin / Eleanor Owen b. abt 1838 Margaret Owen B. abt. 1840 Leah Owen b. abt 1846 Eliza Owen b. abt 1847
Any tips for how to start would be very much appreciated!! Ellin was the only one living at home with Hannah, her parents and a 1yr old William in the 1871 census, so maybe start with her?

Sorry Catrin, but if you cannot find a suitable birth . Possibly a marriage cert for Will, maybe, but not holding out any hopes for a named dad?
Glad you sorted your other thread and it proved positive. Glad to have been of help there
