1871 Bedforshire Census - SCRIVENER
« on: Thursday 27 January 05 00:37 GMT (UK) »

I am trying to locate my greatgrandmother Mary Ann SCRIVENER in the 1871 Census. In the 1861 census she is living in Brickhill Road/North Place. She is with her uncle William SCRIVENER aged 48 born Stanbridge, Beds, her aunt Mary A aged 37 born Leighton Buzzard and their children John aged 14, Sarah aged 11, Mary aged 6, Jane aged 3 and Catherine aged 6 months, all born Leighton Buzzard. I have never found a birth registration for Mary Ann SCRIVENER and do not know her parents identity, although I suspect that she was illegitimate. Any info gratefully received.

Hi Piggywig,
Could this be your lady?

23 Dumfries St Luton
Mary A Scrivener Lodger Unm 23 Hat sewer Born Leighton Buzzard, Beds
RG10/1566 ED 3 Folio 97 Page 25

She is lodging with William Cook and family but listed as separate household. Other Mary Scriveners are married or listed as daughters so seemed unlikely to be yours. Regards Jan  Wink

Hi
Please bear with me as I am new to this chatroom lark. Thank you for looking this up, but I think this isn't my ggrandma. She was aged 2 on the 1861 census. My grandma knew absolutely nothing about either of her parents, only that her mother was a 'Valentine baby' so I've always assumed that she was born in February 1859 which would mean that she'd be about 12 or 13 when the 1871 census was taken. Grandma thought that Mary Ann was born in Leighton Buzzard, but on the 1861 census it says 'Westminster' so I don't know which is correct. If you have any 'daughters' around this age on the 1871 census I'd be most interested to know who the mothers and fathers were. I have done years of research on this without success. I am aware that there were a couple of other Mary Ann Scriveners of the same age on the 1861 census, so any info you can throw my way may at least eliminate a few red herrings. My grandmother said that she never met any relations of either her mother or father and that when she asked she was told that it was none of her business. Mary Ann's  husband (married in 1869) changed his surname twice, so one of them had a dark secret!
Thanks again for your help

Hi Kris
What a star! I'll have a look at the family on the 1871 census that you found and see if I can work my way back from there.  My gran was registered as a KING but her numerous other siblings were a mixture of GRASSBY, HAMPSON and KING. It's taken me years to trace them all. Mary Ann, my grans mum was a bit flighty to say the least! Nan knew that she had had at least two illegit. children before her marriage. One of them was MILLER, the other BRANDOM. A cousin of mine had been researching this long before I started and told me that the birth registration you mention wasn't the right one, but I'm now beginning to wonder if she had made a mistake in her thinking. I'll get a copy and start again from there.
Many thanks
Fay
