Updating FTM *COMPLETED*
« on: Sunday 17 August 08 00:14 BST (UK) »

At the moment I am using FTM 2003 and looking at updating either going with FTM or other versions of software.

As I save everything on a floppy would they still be usable in another program, besides FTM or would they be spat out.

My 2003 was given to me by a relative who had copied all the data onto a cd and all I had to do was install, so I have heaps of information that will not be on floppies, but I guess I could still leave the older version installed.

Any help would be appreciated Grin

Sorry if I sound as a nit wit here Grin

FTM creates a datafile in its native format with a .FTW filename extension.
The only program that can open that file is FTM.  If you were to update FTM then it has backward compatibility and it will open the file and then upgrade it to the latest FTM format.  Once that file has been upgraded then it can't be opened by an older version of FTM.

All family tree history programs can export something called a GEDCOM file which is a structured text file.
All family tree programs can import a GEDCOM file which means you can use another family tree program regardless of what you are using now.

In FTM click on File >> Export File >> Entire File.
A window will open asking you for a 'save as' filename.
Change the Save As Type from the drop down list to GEDCOM (*.GED).

Downside ....  thank you.    You have given me what I was after....  I had seen the GED/Import/Export one, but didn't want to play around with it, in case I had sent it to cyberspace or lost it completely.   My relative was going to talk me through it  ... but at the time I was just learning to navigate the tree at the time Grin

Once again thank you for your time in answering.

I am facing similar probs with new laptop with 'vista'. I installed FTM 2006 and it went off and updated it.  Now I want to transfer all the info from FTM  on old laptop.  I created a GED file and posted it to myself as an attachment.... but new laptop says it does not have software to open file, create new association etc.  Is there a simpler way to do this? Put it on a memory stick?  disc? I really have not a clue and would welcome some patient tuition   Embarrassed

Thanking you all in anticipation

Hi Anne

In theory if you have installed FTM-2006 then it should recognise the GEDCOM file.  I'm a bit puzzled about your reference to FTM updating itself, I didn't realise it did it automatically.

Try saving the attachment to your hard drive in My Documents (the default location).  Then launch the  FTM program and select File and Open from the menu bar at the top left hand corner.  Then select where the GEDCOM file is located.

The other thing to mention is that you do not need to use a GEDCOM file if you created a database file using FTM and you want to import it into FTM.  You are better off transferring the .FTW file because it preserves all the data from your FTM database.  When you create a GEDCOM file it sometimes strips out certain data because not all family tree programs support some of the features of FTM.  For instance I exported a GECOM file out of FTM and imported it into PAF and there were import errors.  I had the marriage status of certain people as Divorced but PAF did not acknowledge that and therefore stripped it out during the import process.

Thanks for taking trouble to ans my query.  When I tried to open it, it came up with "known compatability problems" and suggested online search for solution. I followed along with what came up and not sure if it 'worked' because it keeps telling me about this each time I open it.  I ignore this and click 'run' and it comes up OK.

I might try putting info from old laptop onto a disc and see it likes that.  I should be backing  it up anyway to have a copy. I must admit to getting lazy about keeping information in non digital format! bad habit...

You might want to check in Folder Options, which is located in Control Panel about File Types.

Check whether the following Files Types are listed:

GED
FTW
FBK
FBC

If not then click the New button and add the file type and the program which opens them i.e. FTM.

Thanks downside for perservering with me but really am out of my depth and am afraid to tinker too much.  I will pass on your tips to someone more confident!  I wonder if buying a new version of FTM is final solution? It seems the general criticism of Vista that old software won't work.

It is a shame to have the great potential of new machine but not be able to use it.... bit like just using first gear in new car.  Of course no instructions come with it... probably online manual somewhere  Huh  Of course I only use a tiny bit of the potential of FTM.
