Earl of York « on: Thursday 27 January 05 05:36 GMT (UK) »
I am doing some research for an elderley lady who thinks that her sister married someone who would have been Earl of York if he had not stayed in Australia to marry. I have no idea if this was the truth or just one of those 'tall tales to impress the lady' How can I find out who was the Earl of York around 1900.
Hopefully some one will know how to find out the name. Thank you for any trying to help

Nobody was. York is a Dukedom and has been a Royal Dukedom for about 500 years or so. There is no Earl of York and has not been one since about 900AD or so when a Danish family provided the Jarls at York. Sorry about that

Thank you for the reply. Looks like the man was telling a bit of a tall story to impress the lady in question. May explain why I cannot find the alledged marriage.... I think my elderly lady is going to be a bit dissappointed with the news but that comes from researching family history. At least it makes a change from my ag labs and weavers.....I love any research. Bye from NSW Jill
