Blu-Ray?
« on: Sunday 17 August 08 11:38 BST (UK) »

Does anyone have any comment regarding the purchase of computer or other equipment with Blu-Ray?  How long before Blu-Ray takes over entirely from other standards?  We had floppy disks which are now not generally available then we have got CD/DVD (when will they disappear) and now Blu-Ray.
Any comment most welcome.
Jake.

Hi Jake

Blu Ray is promarily being used for high definition movies at the moment - the blanks are still too expensive to be used for general storage, but I expect the price will come down in time.  You can quite easily add Blu Ray reading/writing capability to your computer by changing the existing CD/DVD reader/writer to a Blu Ray capable one like this one for about £68.

It may be some time if ever, although "blu ray" won the so called format war there are already other formats coming up to challenge its claim to dominance and although as Nick says it is primarily a video format at the moment the delivery of high definition video by other means (on demand services etc) show that even in that area its victory may not be final.

It's a useful add on to have but not a reason to abandon current equipment.

I thank you both for your  comments. As I am considering replacing my comp by the end of the year I will probably steer clear of Blu-Ray and if required later add it on. Thank you again for your most welcomed comments.

I wouldn't necessarily avoid Blu Ray - many people now have stand-alone Blu Ray players attached to their TV's, and there are features on some Blu Ray disks which can only be seen on a PC, so it's good to have a drive on your PC which can use them, if you can have it at a small extra cost.  As Falkryn says, there are always new formats on the horizon, but if we all waited for the ultimate new upgrade to come out, we'll all still be using 286 processors and 5.25" floppy drives  Smiley   What really slowed down the adoption of Blu Ray was a format war between the different manufacturers, which only served to slow down the adoption of a format capable of carrying 50GB of data on one disk.

Fortunately there's usually at least one way to upgrade your PC, should something new come out after you've bought it.

50 Gb on a disc is just the start. I don't know what's currently possible but it's definitely in excess of 200Gb - that's eight layers.  But I have trouble successfully writing dual layer DVDs so I would be a bit dubious about being able to write anything beyond 25Gb single layer BDs for a very long while.

Writing to them is easy - it's reading them back that's the hard part  Wink Grin
