Hi Jake
Blu Ray is promarily being used for high definition movies at the moment - the blanks are still too expensive to be used for general storage, but I expect the price will come down in time. You can quite easily add Blu Ray reading/writing capability to your computer by changing the existing CD/DVD reader/writer to a Blu Ray capable one like this one for about £68.

I wouldn't necessarily avoid Blu Ray - many people now have stand-alone Blu Ray players attached to their TV's, and there are features on some Blu Ray disks which can only be seen on a PC, so it's good to have a drive on your PC which can use them, if you can have it at a small extra cost. As Falkryn says, there are always new formats on the horizon, but if we all waited for the ultimate new upgrade to come out, we'll all still be using 286 processors and 5.25" floppy drives What really slowed down the adoption of Blu Ray was a format war between the different manufacturers, which only served to slow down the adoption of a format capable of carrying 50GB of data on one disk.
Fortunately there's usually at least one way to upgrade your PC, should something new come out after you've bought it.

50 Gb on a disc is just the start. I don't know what's currently possible but it's definitely in excess of 200Gb - that's eight layers. But I have trouble successfully writing dual layer DVDs so I would be a bit dubious about being able to write anything beyond 25Gb single layer BDs for a very long while.

........ But I have trouble successfully writing dual layer DVDs........... Writing to them is easy - it's reading them back that's the hard part
