My grandfather married my grandmother a native of Dundalk on 29th April 1918, Dundalk County Louth. His profession given on Marriage Certificate was Soldier. He was from Belfast, so I would like to know which Regiments from the North would have been stationed in Dundalk throughout WW1. On the wedding photo he is not wearing his uniform, had he perhaps been discharged from active service through injury, hence he was wearing civvy clothes? He is also wearing a badge on his right lapel, wondering how to decipher it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think geographically that Belfast falls in the northern province of Ulster, I did say "the north" unless I'm really thick! and it falls in the west, south or east?

Tishoo you did say North but I was making the point that Ireland was all one country at the time of the 1918 marriage. It's not a matter of 'regiments from the north' as he would have been part of British Army. It is possible that William Simpson was stationed in Belfast and just came to Dundalk for the wedding. Exactly what details are on the certificate? his resience? father's name and occupation? As the Great War was still going on in April 1918 maybe the marriage took place when William was on leave. It was very common for local papers to mention news of World War I soldiers. Have you been able to see if the marriage is in the Dundalk paper?
