On my late grandfathers birth certificate, it says in the fathers occupation "Haulier, Coal Mine of Speen"
Now, his family were all coal miners in wales. Why would it say "coal mine of speen?" Does this mean he was living in speen at the time? The way it is worded is almost like he was working in a coal mine in Speen!
My late grandfather was born in Newbury. His mother lived in speen. I have no idea why my great grandfather would have lived down here if he was a coal miner??
There is no coal under Speen (Berks) so no coal miners working there. Of course a coal miner from elsewhere could be in Speen.
There were no coal wharves in Speen - the major wharves were in Newbury and Greenham. Certainly there was a coal merchant (Adey's) operating alongside West Mills wharf in Newbury. Someone from Speen could work there.
Alternatively - could it read Coal Man?

Currently researching: HEADs in west Berkshire (the Peasemore/Leckhampstead line). Newbury almshouses & many other aspects of the history of the area.
Is the certificate local or GRO? Those from the GRO are notoriously prone to transcription errors - Newbury Register Office will have the original entry. Parish or chapel registers could also help if he was baptised.
I have seen employment records for one Newbury firm (Elliots) - listing the pay of all shop-floor employees week by week. Something similar may have survived for Adey's or other coal merchants/yards but such survivals are very rare.

The Certificate is GRO. William powells (the coal miner from speen) family came from Ferndale in Glamorgan. He had another child in 1921 called cyril powell. I know he was born in newbury but I don't know where. Would there possibly be an entry on the electoral reg for 2 nursery cottages in 1921? I really am not sure if William lived down here or continued to work in wales. It is confusing.
Coal Merchant L.J.Bodman & Sons continued their business operations from Welford Park Station after closure of the Northern section of the line in 1960. The station approach road took the form of a junction connecting with the Newbury to Lambourn Road. The road continued on past the the loading dock on Lambourn end of the 'down' platform, and thus, provided access to the goods yard and siding.
I don't know where welford park station is in regards to speen though.
