Found this link for the South Tyneside Register Office. Got some useful information and hoped some others may benefit from it.

One thing had me a bit puzzled. The reference numbers are different from those  on  FreeBMD. Could this be because the Register Office has the facility to issue their own certificates?

All local offices have their own system.  The details are then sent up to the GRO who put them into their referencing system.   If you apply to the local office for the certificate the GRO reference is not applicable.  They will often do a wider search for you and not charge if checking details are incorrect.  Usually £7 just as from the GRO.
