Lookup or advice required JOHNSON
« on: Wednesday 20 August 08 15:32 UTC (UK) »

HI one of my ancestors Edward Johnson appears on the 1881 census of England as being born in Louth Ireland. He was married in 1871 in Leeds parish church to a Leeds girl and his father is on the marriage cert. as an Edward as well (provisions dealer). He is down as 21 years old so he was born about 1850 give or take a year. I've found two Irish lads William and Edward Johnson (cloth drapers) in Leeds on the 1861 census I think it's him and maybe a brother. Could someone from their part of the world look the johnsons up or maybe give me advice on looking in Ireland! I don't want to be booking my flight to Ireland if there is nothing to find!!

Afraid it's not as simple aslooking up Johnsons. In Ireland Johnston is often used so be sure to keep an eye out for that spelling as well.
Civil registration of births in Ireland began 1864 so there will be no birth certificate for Edward.
To find church records, the next source, you need to know the family's religion and where they lived (parish if not actual townland not just the county).

The only clue to where he hailed from is a census return that says louth I know that could be the town or just the county. and as for the religion i could only guess, none of my family have been catholic and he was married in a parish church in Leeds. Having said that he disappeared of the scene in 1890 ish either died or ran off, his wife is down as widowed. So his kids were brought up by their mother who could have been church of england. I cannot be any clearer than that I do not know what to do when I found out he might be from Ireland it through me> all my other relatives are from Leeds or the surroundings. I suppose this is the challenge of tracing the family tree. Cheers BEN

Hi, my family name is Johnson, or Johnston, based in Dunleer Co. Louth. I know that my family history ,originate from the 1800's with 3 brothers who moved from Scotland to the louth area. The next time I'm visiting my uncles, I'll see if they are aware of any possible links in the area or not. It's quite interesting, as was earlier suggested, my family are both Johnson or Johnston - something to do with changing the surname so as not to receive each other's post!!

Hi Ben, thanks for the information. I'll pass this  by my family and see if they can help. I know one of my uncles is really knowledgeable on not just our family, but possess a lot of stories about families in the area. My family are buried in Monasterboice, and he has stories about most of the families buried there, so he might be able to find a link. Sandra
