Hugh Boisdale McDonald-gentleman
« on: Wednesday 20 August 08 19:45 BST (UK) »

Looking for info on a Hugh Boisdale McDonald. He lived in Liverpool from about 1843 until his death about 1857. I know that he was a "fund holder" which I believe means he was independantly wealthy. He is listed as a gentleman on our ancestor's marriage certificate.

Where would I find out info on him. I know that he lived at 91 Grove St on the 1851 census. He was of the Clan Ranald clan and must have been involved in shipping or been a merchant as he lived in Argyll, Plymouth, Swansea and Liverpool---all port cities.

Any info would be helpful.

Presumably he was a McDonald of the clan McDonald of Boisdale. There are a couple of BMD announcements in the Liverpool Mercury which may interest you.

8/9/1854 re marriage of daughter Flora to Alban Williams (EDIT - address given is Grove House, Abercromby Square)
28/7/1875 re death of 7th son Hugh in Tasmania aged 31 ( EDIT - address given is 108, possibly 103, Stanhope Terrrace, Upper Stanhope Street)

Send me your email address by PM and I'll email the details to you (don't post your email address on the thread).

Thanks for the info!. The internet info is most likely from my research that I submitted already. I know that Hugh had a son Hugh and a daughter Flora so I will check this new info out!

He lived on Grove St in 1851.

If he's the one who lived at 91 Grove Street, he was in prison for debt in 1857:

"Hugh Macdonald, formerly of No. 91, and late of No. 12.
Grove-street, Liverpool, Lancashire, Lodging-house
Keeper"

London Gazette, 24 November 1857 page 4123

I'm having more luck searching for MacDonald; and sometimes he styles himself "Hugh MacDonald Boisdale".

More from the Liverpool Mercury:

Deaths 9 Aug 1856: July 10 at Demerara in his 19th year Alexander Campell MacDonald, fourth son of Hugh MacDonald Boisdale of this town

Deaths 17 Nov 1858: Nov.8 at her father's residence  54 Huskisson Street aged 2? Flora wife of Mr Alban Williams of 17 Poplar Grove Prince's Park, and eldest daughter of Mr Hugh MacDonald Boisdale

He's a bit elusive isn't he? That address at 54 Huskisson Street is occupied in 1861 by a Samuel Pearce and family per the census, Yet per the newspaper announcements Hugh MacDonald/Boisdale was living there in 1858, 1862 and 1865 (it's also on daughter Mary's 1865 marriage certificate apparently http://genealogy.clanmoffat.org/getperson.php?personID=I606&tree=UKEire)

Where was Hugh in 1861? His wife Mary is at 59 Elizabeth Street with sons Charles and Donald.

Their address in the 1851 census is 82 Grove Street which ties in with this in the Gazette 17 Nov 1857 page 3913:

"Hugh Macdonald, late of No. 82, Grove-street, Liverpool,
Lancashire, Lodging-house Keeper.—In the Gaol of
Lancaster"

I did a search for 82 Grove Street in the Liverpool Mercury and came up with several references to the Mac/Mc Donalds, including civil actions in 1856 and 1857 in which it was alleged that they had taken delivery of, and kept, goods intended for other people in Grove Street. In one case the paper reports  that Mrs McDonald is a frequent visitor to the court and has an inclination to an irregular course of proceeding in defence of her cases (her defence in that one was that she was at her daughter's place in Prince's Park at the time) .

Shaun,

I have just returned from a 2 day trip. This is AMAZING!! I have been searching for this man and information about his family for over 20 years! It's very hard from here in Canada. I am so grateful!

I wonder when he (Hugh) died. Obviously they were "illusive" and shady..both of them. I had found info on his son and his son Colin's wife. They were living quite well. I didn't know that he had moved to Tasmania.

It would be wonderful to find out when he died and if he left a will. Your information would explain why our ancestor was living rather poorly.

It's also interesting that Hugh had married his wife Mary Hender in 1843 at Gretna as an irregular marriage as they already were living in Liverpool and had several children.  That's another story I guess.

Again, many thanks!
