Tweedsmuir Police House
« on: Friday 20 June 08 17:07 UTC (UK) »

Hi there
I am interested in the location of Tweedsmuir Police Station/House as some ancestors were living there in 1901. Any pictures would be gratefully received. Thanks

Hi Lesley,

To see the location on a map, see the 3rd series OS map, published 1904.

http://www.nls.uk/maps/early/os_scotland_oneinch_3rd_list.html

Select Sheet 16 - Moffat

Go to the top edge, about 30% of the way in from the top-left corner. Click on the map there, by the road to Edinburgh (between 3°25'W and 3°24'W). Click on that point until the writing is readable.

Click on the down arrow to head southwards on that road until you see Tweedsmuir. Turn off the main road, following the side road to the south-east-ish and you should see the police station marked a short distance down that road.

On a current map of the area, there are a few houses on the other side of the road. However it looks like the road was re-aligned when the reservoir was built, to take it up higher and onto the dam-top. So it is possible that one of the houses shown on that other side of the road is the former police station.

current OS map showing Tweedsmuir and Talla area.

For some pictures of the area, see:

Thank you for that ADP. We always wondered where the location was.
My ancestor was Police Sergeant John Robertson from Channelkirk, Berwickshire, and was awarded a gold watch for burying navvies who died of cholera whilst building a dam up in the hills.
Regards
Lesley
