You can see the 1900 Census for free here:  http://labs.familysearch.org/  It looks like there may be more than one John Roberts of that age in Pennsylvania at that time.

I may be wrong, but I've never heard of gold mines in Pennsylvania.  However, there were a ton of coal mines there.

While growing up in Pennsylvania, I never heard a word about gold mining there. However, this little bit comes from Wikipedia's Gold Mining in the United States article: "About 37 thousand troy ounces (1.2 tonnes) of gold was produced from the Cornwall iron mine five miles south of Lebanon, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. Although the deposit produced iron since 1742, no gold was reported from the mine until 1908."

That is about fifty miles south of the anthracite mining region in Pennsylvania and about 150 miles east of the bituminous mining region. Plus it would have been 24 years after you John Roberts came to the U.S. Not impossible, but more likely he was a coal miner.

Unfortunately for your search, many of the coal miners in Pennsylvania in the 1880s and 1890s were Welsh, meaning that there were many named Roberts, Jones, etc. It is difficult to distinguish among them without more information.

Thanks John for the info  , my info is scant due to conflicking family stories, and no positive date of departure , only that is last child was born in 1882 and his wife remarrying in1889. but his was killed in an accident not long after arriving, while his wife and children were waiting to join him.  i  big search on my hands .
