Hi, I am wondering if anyone has access to the St Phillip and St Jacob, Bristol parish registers. I am trying to find the birth and parents of William Radford, born approx 1804, and his wife Mary (last name unknown), born approx 1807, who all resided in and were married in this parish according to census records. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Kristy

Kristy,
If you have looked at the Hugh Wallis site - http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountryEngland.htm you will have found no batch numbers for St P & J
However, I went to the LDS site http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true and looked for a common name - John Smith - 1800 +/- 2 and found a few. I then used the Windows search to find Bristol and in particular - Philip. I found one, a marriage at St P & J and it was an extracted entry - Batch number M172882.
Going to the Hugh Wallis site I entered Radford and the M batch number on the Search Criteria page and up came eight Radford marriages the data for which were extracted from St P & J church records. Alas, there was no William.
O.K., this doesn't help you directly, but in reality census records cannot give the location of a marriage except in guessing where it might have taken place. A guessing method used often by LDS members.
However, the method I've described above might help you to find more batch numbers not in the Hugh Wallis site or given by the procedure at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/FindingBatchNos.html you might be luckier in your search than I was
If you or anybody reading this finds non-HW batch numbers, I hope they advertise them.
Sorry this is so long.
Good luck,
Chas

Kristy,
Thought I'd try changing the M to a C in the batch number - no Joy.
BUT then I tried C172881 and Radford on the Search Criteria page and found some - have a look for yourself, it will be more more interesting than me giving a list of names.
Regards
Chas

I have a baptism and marriage index for the Bristol Diocese that includes St Phillip & Jacob but I can find no baptism or marriage entry for William Radford in the parish around that time.
There are various marriage entries for a William Radford marrying a Mary in other Bristol parishes in the mid to late 1820's. I see from the 1841 and 1851 censuses (if I have the right family Mary was a widow by 1851) that there were children born after 1837 so a birth certificate of one of them would give you Mary's maiden name and thus possibly a lead to her marriage to William.
I checked for baptisms in St. Philip & Jacob of children born to a Willliam and Mary Radford prior to 1837 and found these three entries:
Henry Radford 13/6/1830
Elizabeth Jane Radford 7/10/1832
James Radford 12/3/1837
The Elizabeth and James records match fairly well to the census records but I couldn't find baptisms in the parish for the other children recorded on the 1841 census.

Thanks so much pritch. You do have the right family, but unfortunately it looks like they must be in another Bristol parish. William John Radford (their son born about 1827) is my relative and he is one you couldnt find in that parish either, so they must be somewhere else!!. In the 1861 census it lists Mary (born approx 1807) as being born in St Philip, but until I get her last name I wont be able to follow that one up either. Can you purchase that Bristol diocese baptism and marriage index? It would probably have many of the dead ends in it that I am trying to track down. I have searched all the IGI numbers on the Hugh Wallis site, but no luck there either. Thanks again

There is a baptism for a William John Radford son of William and Mary Radford on 23/12/1827 in the parish of St. Nicholas. It's the only one of that name in the Bristol index.
You can purchase various baptism and marriage indexes of the Bristol Diocese on CD. The link will take you to the Bristol & Avon Family History Society website where you can find details and download an order form.
