Ronald Spencer FUNNELL - early Newquay surfer
« on: Sunday 24 August 08 21:10 UTC (UK) »

Hi everyone,
I'm looking for anything at all on Ronald Spencer Funnell born 1894 in Totnes, Devon. Commercial Traveler in 1916 when he joined the Territorial Forces. Lived in Newquay from 1944 to 1962, if not longer. Published a 36 page book "The Art of Surf-Riding on the Cornish Coast" in 1934, republished in 1953. Be grateful for anything concerning his life and achievements: newspaper articles, trade directory entries, surf club archives, relatives...
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Andy,

At the time of his daughters baptism in the 1940's (when she was apparently 19 years old) his address was 19 Tolcarne Road Newquay. He was described as a Manufacturers Agent...............Cheers Kris  Cheesy

The marriage was in St Col though he is listed as Robert  Undecided

Robert S FUNNELL = Phyllis Maude COCKS Sep 1/4 1918 St Col 5c 127. Looks like they had at least 3 children all born in Croydon

Phyllis was from Newquay

1901 census

RG13/2207 Folio 23 Page 38
Gover Lane
Newquay

COCK Harry Head 36 Mar b Newquay Living on own means
COCK Harriet B Wife 36 Mar b Newquay
COCK Harry A Son 9 b Newquay
COCK Phyllis N Dau 4

COCK Phyllis Maud was baptised on the 25 Nov 1896 Newquay Chapel parents Harry and Harriet Bessie. Harry was described as a retired innkeeper

COCK Harry Arthur was baptised 37 Jan 1892 Newquay Chapel parents Harry and Fanny father farmer of Newquay

Bit sidetracked from Ronald's achievements with this Andy. Hope it is of help.

COCK Harry = SMALE Fanny Dec 1890 St Col 5c 159 married 17 Dec 1890 Newquay Chapel

Fanny died Dec 1893 aged 31 years St Col 5c 74 died 13 Oct 1893 buried Newquay old cemetery

COCK Harry = HUXTABLE Harriet Bessie Dec 1895 St Col 5c 166 married 30 Dec 1895 St Columb Minor Parish Church

Harry died 29 Nov 1939 aged 75 and appeares to have been interred with Fanny at Newquay Old Cemetery

hepburn & krisesjoint, very grateful for all this information. Some interesting leads.

@krisesjoint - what makes you think Ronald S. and Phyllis had "3 children, all born in Croydon"?

If anyone has anything on his surfing life, that would be great.

Again, many thanks.

Hi Andy,

Three children are listed as born in Croydon. I presume all three are his as he has married by then and mother is Cocks and one is the one I found the baptism for nearly 20 years later in Newquay Wink I wont list them as they may be living. - will PM you

Andy ,
Im guessing by your surname , you're related ?! .. Im writing a book on the history of bellyboarding/surfriding & a good friend has a copy of the book , it would be great to chat & see what youve found out , his book was really the only early guide to surfriding & as such pretty special .
It would be great to hear from you .
All the best
