My family has been traced back to John Boddy from Mohill Leitrim. He was born about 1816. When he was old enough he immigrated to Leeds in Ontario, Canada. He was accompanied by a brother named Johnson and his future wife Matilda Hunt born about 1816-1820. I am looking for any information with regards to any of John's descendants including those still living. I am not sure what year he immigrated but there is a John Boddy's name on a petition that was sent to the Upper Canada (Ontario) government in 1835.. In 1832 three ships left Ireland for Canada. they were The Lord Melville, The Eveline and The England. If he was on one of these ships it would make him about 16 years old. I am attempting to track down passenger manifests on the three ships. you may be able to use this information.
I would really appreciate whatever information that can be sent to me
Update: I was able to find the passenger lists for the three ships I mentioned and John and Matilda were not on any of them. He is supposed to have immigrated somewhere between 1850 - 1865. I had assumed they had landed at either St Johns or Halifax. I have since discovered that many Irish immigrants landed at Quebec city and Montreal. Thnx for the replies I have received. They do provide me with some areas to check out.

Gord, not sure if you know about the following, the magazine Motor Sport, had a very well known "John Boddy, who if my memory is correct was once its editor, he was also an authority on Brookland track history, i know his time frame, c. b.c. 1920s is not the one you're looking at, but maybe a connection ?. Try a Google on the names ? . Bodger

Hi There
I really appreciate your suggestions. I know there are lots of Canadian records however many of the records prior to 1860 are not available. But I now know to contact the geneology society of the area where he settled.
My cousin who did the reasearch is firmly convinced that both John and Matilda were born in Mohill
Thnx once again for you help

Am puzzled by this comment: "I know there are lots of Canadian records however many of the records prior to 1860 are not available."
You mentioned that "My family has been traced back to John Boddy from Mohill Leitrim." in your 1st post but then in you last post "My cousin who did the reasearch is firmly convinced that both John and Matilda were born in Mohill." Have you or your cousin found any sources to confirm this , is it based on family tradition (which is often correct) or from some other reason?
Ontario is one of the easier places in Canada to find information on relatives. Contacting the local historical society is a good idea. Also try Ontario GenWeb. It does take time and patience to go through so many pages and check everything. www.geneofun.on.ca/ongenweb

Think Gord Boddy needs to establish that his John Boddy born c1816 was actually from Mohill area before looking at records there. In addition to 1901 census there are lots of Boddys in Griffith's Valuation (mid 1800s) and might be church records which could help.

Hi bodger,
You got me thinking .... John Boddy ... I thought for a minute that the name looked familiar but only found WB (Bill) Boddy, MBE, who was the founding Editor of Motor Sport in 1930. That left me wondering who was John Boddy as I seem to recall an eccentricly dressed motorsport journalist complete with deerstalker and cloak ... a bit more research and I think John's surname was Bolster.
Gord Boddy,
It would be an idea to consider an alternative spelling ...
The Flax List of 1796 lists four guys named Body in Co. Leitrim
Wiliam, Cloone Michael, Mohill John, Mohill Andrew, Cloone
Body and Boddy both from Mohill ... it could be worth further research
Griffith's Primary Valuation which took place in Leitrim in 1856 lists several people named Boddy at Mohill.
They may have been related to your ancestor. www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/leitrim/mohill.php
Has the possibility of John having siblings who remained in Ireland when he emigrated been eliminated? If not then there may be descendents of those siblings living in Mohill today. If you haven't already written to the Editor of the Leitrim Observer here's a link to a form on which you can compose your message www.leitrimobserver.ie/contactus.aspx
