Hi all
I'm hoping someone can help me locate the parents of a MICHAEL CALLAN born possibly 1835 in Ireland. From marriage cert his father was THOMAS CALLAN, a Tailor. I have searched through the England census and cannot find a possible match for Thomas Callan so I have concluded that he probably stayed in Ireland.
I have no idea which county Michael was from as on all census' he simply says Ireland, which is why I think this request is possibly a long shot!
Here is a link to the search so far on Durham boards...http://www.rootschat.com/links/045v/

To search for family in Ireland you really do need a place (parish if not actual townland not just the county or 'Ireland').

hi emma,
in griffiths valuation of ireland callans were fairly spread throughout ireland but counties louth and monaghan had by far the majority, you can search it here;
http://griffiths.askaboutireland.ie/gv4/gv_start.php.
i also had a look on the irish family history foundation site and found 10 church baptism records for michael callan. the range was between 1831-1839.
co.louth...1832,1833,1835,1836,1837 co.armagh...1832,1835 co.kildare...1837 co.westmeath...1838 co.cavan...1838
its free to view the index's on this site but to view any record costs 5 euro's, basically a lucky dip and maybe no prize at the end!

hope this helps a bit

The trouble with trying to do research that way is 1) you don't know if all the baptisms have been included in the database- many church records from that period don't survive 2) very often ages in early records are not accurate 3) if you were to get a baptismal record (and even if the father was a tailor named Thomas) you can't be 100% sure you have actually found your Michael Callan.

you would be right aghadowey, even if emma did find a michael callan,born in the right year, with a father called thomas who was a tailor she couldnt be 100% sure it was the right one but is there anyway to be 100% sure? tony

The more families named Callan that there are in the area the better the chance of 'finding' the wrong one.
