Sarah MERRY 1777 - 1829
« on: Wednesday 27 August 08 22:15 UTC (UK) »

Having sorted out Sarah's children with the aid of members of this group. I would like to return to the subject of her parents. I can find no trace of them in Toft and of course they could just come from the next village.
The main two centres of Merrys in Cambs seem to be Orwell and Steeple Morden, so they are a possibility. The problem seems to be that Sarah was such a popular name that most Merry marriages  produced a Sarah. There are a good few on IGI but none of them married Joseph Dickerson.

There is nothing wrong with calling one's daughter Sarah - it is the most popular girl's name in my family and though I did not know that at the time , I called my only daughter Sarah. There must be a fair chance that Sarah Merry's mother shared her name too.

Can any of you helpful souls make me merry?

Hi,
I've searched the Cambridgeshire baptism index and found two Sarah's.
Sarah Merry bap 16 Feb 1772 dau of John and Elizabeth. Orwell, but she seems to be the Sarah who married John Ward in Orwell  5 Mar 1793
Sarah Merry bap 24 Feb 1782 dau of Richard and Ann and again she seems to be the Sarah married 8 Feb 1805 in Wimpole to Henry Cooper.
These are the only two Sarahs baptised near 1777. Could she have been illegitimate?

I had a problem finding my 3x gt grandfather. He was illegitimate and wasn't baptised, then I found a reference to his birth in Poor Law records for Essex. It took me 5 years to find him!

Tempsford.

Thank you, Tempsford. I had found these two Sarahs as well. I think your suggestion of illegitimacy may be a possibility as trying to follow this line in my family has been littered with "unconventional" arrangements. ( how's that for being polite?)

Another possibility is they may have been travellers, as there seem to have been some "horse handlers" in the family at the time and Sarah did marry the blacksmith. If they came from out of the county, they may be hard to find. It is odd that I can't find a ancestor for husband Joseph either, and blacksmiths tend to be very stable and easy to follow lines. (sorry, I've just spotted the pun.)

Joseph Dickerson's parents are on the IGI on his Gamlingay 1775 christening, as I told you when I found him in 1851, birthplace Gamlingay.

I gave you his Toft marriage on the other thread, after someone had found it on Boyds Marriage Index. The reason you couldn't find it on the IGI is that Toft marriages post 1780 aren't on the IGI. I found it on the BVRI. Similarly Toft baptisms aren't on the IGI at all, but are on the BVRI. But against all my expectations there are no Merrys at all in Toft.

So it is vital that you check the marriage entry for Joseph and Sarah to see what extra detail is given. Forget the "possibilities", at least until after you've checked the parish register! If you're dead lucky Sarah's parish of residence may be other than Toft - if Thomas was resident in Toft, which he would have been if he were a widower (see other thread), then Sarah might have been from elsewhere.

I'm not sure how possible illegitimacy might affect the issue, as IF she were baptised it would have been as Sarah Merry, base born daughter of (--?--) Merry.

However the only Toft marriage/baptism prior to Sarah's marriage was a marriage between Thomas Merry and Mary Cann on 2 Feb 1766. I think this would be worth checking out - they might have been non-conformist so Sarah was't baptised in the established church. They certainly didn't baptise any children in Toft (nor can I see any Merry burials 1831-37)
