Ramsey records Mooncrystal completed
« on: Friday 29 August 08 23:54 UTC (UK) »

Greetings,
This is my first request and I don't know how it works really.  I am researching a Charlotte Abbot who married into my family.  The first record I have of her is in a poorhouse in Ramsey in 1881 when she is 9.  It also mentions a Julia Abbot age 11 and I wonder if this could be a sister.  Charlotte married William Dolby in Somersham in 1892.  She lists her father as Charles Abbot , occupation butcher.  She lists her birthplace as Ramsey on the 1901 census.

I would like more information on what happened to her family.  I can't find them on a census.  How did she end up in a poor house in Ramsey and what happened to her family.  Did she have sibblings?

Anyway, this is where I am trying to fill in the pieces.  Any records you have from Ramsey that might answer these questions would be appreciated.  Linda

Hi Linda

Welcome to Rootschat!

In 1871 living in Ramsey RG10/1523 folio 115B
Charles Abbott head marr 26 butcher b Ramsey
Sarah Abbott wife 26 b Ramsey
Charles W Abbott son 6 scholar b Ramsey
Ester Abbott dau 4 b Ramsey
Juller Abbott dau 2 b Ramsey (on Ancestry as Fuller Phillips)
Lolle/Lotte? Abbott dau 1 b Ramsey (on Ancestry as Lotte Phillips)

So perhaps Charlotte was telling the truth about her father when she married.

In 1891 Charlotte 20 was a servant in Peterborough, whilst Julia 21 was a servant in Sutton, Surrey

In 1881 there's a Charles Habit 16 b Ramsey living in Ramsey, as a farm servant, and an Esther Abbot 14 b Ramsey as a servant in Foxton Cambs

There are births in Huntingdon registration district (which includes Ramsey) of a Julia Abbott in the June quarter 1868 and of Lottie Abbott in June 1870. I suspect these are your Julia and Charlotte.

A Sarah Abbott age 28 died in the March quarter 1872 in Huntingdon registration district, which may be the mother. I can't find Charles the butcher after 1871, but with the two youngest children in the workhouse and the older two working, it would seem that something pretty drastic had happened.

Unfortunately Ruth (mooncrystal) hasn't been on this board for a while, so she may not see this thread. But using censuses and FreeBMD can help untangle the web

David

Wow, David, right on!!!!  That is exactly what I was looking for.  Charlotte was my great grandmother.  I knew something drastic must have happened to her family.  In the 1851 census I found a Charles Abbott age 6 born in Ramsey and I wondered if that could have been her father.  His father is listed as William Abbott age 40 also born in Ramsey.

What threw me off originally is that I found a Charles Abbott born in 1821 who was also a butcher but he was in the Wisbech area in 1841.  He is listed on the 1841 census with mother Mary age 50.  Then I found a marriage for him in Sept. 1859 also in Wisbech.  I just couldn't figure out how he got to Wisbech.

I also tried to track a Charles Abbott who was born in Somersham  in 1827 and is shown as retired on the 1901 census.

Thank you so much for your information.  I have had to go into my "files" and clean out the other Abbotts.  It feels good to be on the right track again.  You have made my day!  Linda
