I am again on the hunt for gt gt grandad Joseph William Gallington born May 1870 but still cannot find him in the 1871 census so have taken another tack. His birth certificate shows Mum as MaryJane Gallington nee Allen and dad is William Joseph Gallington, His address then was 10 Bridgewater Square, I have found dad living at Tibberton St Islington with his mum and dad and showing as unmarried. He was married but to Catherine Mary Jane Nolson in 1868 but she too seems to have disappeared.
I have looked up for Joseph Allen instead thinking he might be living with his Mum Mary Jane and found two Joseph Allen's about the right age. One is in Poplar ref 37 97 and the other in Holborn ref 8 328.
Would someone be able to check these two Joseph's out and see if he is with Mum, Mary Jane was born about 1851 in St Lukes, Middlesex according to the 1881 census. I do think that she and William J never married but continued to live together and have about 10 kids.
thanks

What about this?
James Joseph Nolson June 1871 Islington 1b 278
I would guess that that Mary Jane from Joseph's birth cert is Catherine Mary Jane, maybe they weren't allowed to marry by their parents as William Joseph would have only been 17? at the time of the marriage in 1868

Second thoughts, where does the Nolson fit wilth Mary Jane Allen? 2shea has the birth cert for May 1870, not 1871 and he was Joseph William Jun 1870 London C. 1c 24 Gallington Joseph William
In 1881 census, the Mary wife of William Joseph was born 1852, Catherine MJ was born 1847 Do you think that he did actually marry Catherine, does 2shea have the marriage cert or should we be looking for a marriage to Mary Allen instead?

I do have a marriage certificate for William Joseph Gallington and Catharine Mary Jane Nolson, for 25 Dec 1868 showing him as a minor and her at full age which would be about right. I then have the birth certificate for Joseph William in 1870. I had always assumed that the 1881 census was Catherine MJ with birth date just slightly different and it wasnt until I got Joseph's birth certificate that I go a shock to find it was Mary Jane Allen, I have two more birth certificates for other children born later with the same notation. So really weird. I can find no marriage for WJ and MJ Allen, and dont know what happened to CMJ Nolson either - no death for either lady. Family tales said that WJ did have two wives, so some of this must be relatively true .

How interesting!
I've just been looking for 10 Bridgwater Square, which is in St. Giles Cripplegate, In 1871 the census page shows several families at No.10, but not yours. Wade, Anderson, Barnard, Brown & Hammett
Still no sign of Mary J and baby though, or of Catherine and her mother Jane, although her brother James is married and living in London

Thanks for looking, always open to fresh ideas and suggestions. I have found Catherine MJ's mother, Jane but she is back living in Yorkshire, quite a few Nolsons there in both 1871 and 1881 and looked at all the Nolson siblings, and no CMJ or Joseph. In 1861 there was a MKJ Allen living with her father William but not there in 1871. A real mystery which I may never get to the bottom of.
Thanks again for helping - I will just keeping looking
