Wexford birth 1861
« on: Saturday 30 August 08 09:01 UTC (UK) »

Hi, I have just joined and am hopeful that someone can help me find information on the birth of Thomas Henry Stradling who was born in Wexford  26th July 1863 - date on his service records in the Navy.
This is a puzzle because I have no information of his family ever being in Ireland. His father, Francis, was in the army and several children were born in the Channel Islands and around the UK.
UK Census returns also show birth to be in Wexford ireland.

I see that birth records weren't kept until 1864 in Wexford, but if his father was in the army, would they be kept somewhere?
thanks

Hi, thank you very much for your reply.  Francis was in the Army, his son Thomas Henry was born in Ireland and later joined the Navy.
I tried googling RCB Wexford but nothing comes up for online searches of parish records. Am I looking in the wrong place?

Not sure what information you gotten in between the two postings but you are correct that civil registration of births in Ireland started in 1864.
Don't know what 'RCB Wexford' is supposed to be but this site might help- it is for Roman Catholic Parish records:
www.from-ireland.net/parishrecords/wex/wexrcindex.htm
If he was baptised in the Church of Ireland (or another religion) the above site will not apply.

If you put 'wexford parish records' into a search engine like Google lots of other sites come up.

Many thanks for your replys.  The family were not catholic so that site wont help unfortunately. Undecided
I would have thought that Thomas Henry would have be baptised as the rest of the family were.
Does anyone know if there is an army camp anywhere in Co. Wexford as I dont even know which town they were in.  Roll Eyes
Would it have had British soldiers stationed there in 1863?
thankyou  Cheesy

civil reg started earlier for non Catholics.  Check it out at the LDS centres or try it at the GRO as you have the exact date.

Civil registration for Catholic marriages started in 1864 (from 1845 for other marriages) but registration of births (as I mentioned) and deaths started in 1864 irrespective of religion.
