Elizabeth LINEY and Samuel TARRANT in Winterslow
« on: Saturday 30 August 08 19:03 UTC (UK) »

Could someone help ? Samuel Tarrant c1833-1891 is my Grt Grt Grt Grandad but I am stuck. In the 1841 and 51 census he is living with his Aunt, a (widowed ?) publican. Elizabeth Liney c1776 from Winterslow. Her descendents are no problem to trace, its her ancestors and exactley who is Samuel Tarrant where I have drawn a blank.

Samual later took a partner Hannah Lintott from Liss Hampshire, continued to use Liney as a surname in 1871 census, both died in Q1 1891 Barton district (Eccles). Their kids All used Tarrant as their surname. Though the first Alexander Liney or Tarrant is completely off the Radar !

Please Help

David in Manchester.

Not too sure, its making the connection between Liney and Tarrant whats the problem. Either Elizabeth Liney c1786 was formerly a Tarrant (hence shes bringing up Samuel as a nephew) or she has sisters who married a Tarrant.

One last posibility is shes a widow, her other kids are at least 7 years older than Samuel (aged 8 in 1841) and she is really his mother and gave him his fathers surname ? Though it would have been a late birth.

There is the following baptism in Winterslow:

10 March 1833 - Samuel Tarrant - son of Alexander & Elizabeth, labourer.

Hello,

I have found a Samuel Tarrant b 1833 in Highworth, Wiltshire to Henry and Anne.

It may be true that he is the same one, being brought up by an Aunt - I have found that two other possibly sons of Henry and Anne disappear / appear with random relatives - a Robert Tarrant b 1841 is living with his grandmother Ann Horne, in the 1851 census, and Alfred Tarrant (my great great great grandfather) b 1848, is at a school in Gloucestershire in the 1861 census. They had at least 11 children; perhaps they could not afford to look after all?

Ann Horne is the mother of Anne Tarrant nee Horne, as far as I can tell.

another hint maybe that there is a Samuel Tarrant listed in the 1851 as a lodger in Bermondsey; he is a bootmaker. Henry Tarrant was a cordwainer, which is a bootmaker!

I hope this helps?

when looking at the census information,

there is also a Samuel Tarrant who returns to Swindon and is living with Ann Tarrant in the 1861 census, so perhaps we are looking at two different Samuel Tarrants?

Why should the Samuel born in Swindon be relevant when there is a Samuel baptised in the correct year in Winterslow (see my earlier post on this thread)?

The thread did not state which Samuel b 1833 it was now confirmed to be, or if a connection between Liney and Tarrant had now been made, so thought my idea might be helpful? Glad you found the one you were looking for...
