Help please? I am hoping for a long shot! Perhaps a search in 1861, or 1871 Census for my grandmother, Mina MacDonald & her family. I have only her d. cert. details, they are: d. 19/3/ 1936, NSW Aust. age 81. parents William MacDonald & Annie, place of birth Inverness. Her b. therefore around 1855. Mina migrated to New Zealand before 1881 (details unknown) where she married my grandfather Roland Cole 1879, Dunedin. Having searched the igi there is no listing for a b. for Mina (or Williamina / Wilhelmina which I assume was her full name) with parents William & Annie. The closest I can get is a Williamina b. 1856, Croy & Dalcoss, Inverness but parents are William & Catherine Rose. I dont think this is the family. I have found a marriage for a William MacDonald to an Ann Kennedy in 6/6/1852 Kilmonivaig, Inverness but cannot find any refernce to any children being born. I also found a m. for A William to an Ann MacCuish but no Williamina among their children are listed ! If someone can do a quick check for a Minna (Williamina) age abt. 6 (1861 census) / abt. 16 (1871 census) b. possibly Inverness? in Inverness. par. William & Annie I would really appreciate it. thanks from Oz, Vicki

Hi Wendy Unfortunately I do not have a thing!!!, other than my grandmothers d. cert which gives minimal details. My mother has no recollection of any brothers/sisters so I am working from scratch so to speak. Would appreciate absolutely anything! Vicki

Hi Vicki
The William and Catherine one looks like it could be further investigated. The age of the children suggests a possible second marriage - Williamina is 4 and there is a younger sibling aged 2. Then a big gap - 10, 12 and 14. The eldest daughter (14) is called Ann. It might be that the informant on the death cert could have mixed things up
I don't see any other families that come near to matching your criteria, otherwise. Also, the family could have emigrated before 1861.
Gadget
Added - checked the 1851 and the parents are William and Catherine, so my theory of second marriage doesn't seem to work

Hi Gadget I appreciate the time. It is weird as I was leaning towards this family. I have printed off everything that I have on them. I have 7 children.
1 F: Anne MACDONALD Birth: 28 Oct 1845 ---------------------------------------- 2 F: Catherine MACDONALD Birth: 5 Nov 1848 ---------------------------------------- 3 F: Janet MACDONALD, GG Aunt Birth: 17 Jul 1851 Croy & Dalcross, Inverness, Scotland4 ---------------------------------------- 4 M: William MACDONALD, GG Uncle Birth: 9 Jan 1854 Croy & Dalcross, Inverness, Scotland4 ---------------------------------------- 5 F: Williamina MACDONALD "Minna", G Grandmother Birth: 28 Dec 1856 Croy & Dalcross, Inverness, Scotland4 Birth Memo: not substantiated Death: 19 Mar 1936 Hamilton, NSW3, 5570 Spouse: Rowland John COLE, G Grandfather Marriage: 25 Jan 1879 New Zealand1, 3260 NZ ---------------------------------------- 6 M: John MACDONALD, GG Uncle Birth: 8 Apr 1859 Croy & Dalcross, Inverness, Scotland4 ---------------------------------------- 7 M: James MACDONALD, GG Uncle Birth: 11 Sep 1861 Croy & Dalcross, Inverness, Scotland4 Having spent all day online came up with 1 piece of info via the 1869 Debtors list. 6 Macdonalds were on the vessel Paria dep. Glasgow 11/10/1865 to Port Chalmers NZ 6 Jan 1866. Margaret, Elizabeth, Williamina* Charles, James* Mary so am working with these names now.
The only other family close was the William & Ann Kennedy m 1852. but no children. Conflicting igi entry however found 7 children b. to them from 1827 -1842 (but no Williamina). Any further digging would be appreciated, maybe deaths reg. Very puzzling Vicki

Having spent all day online came up with 1 piece of info via the 1869 Debtors list. 6 Macdonalds were on the vessel Paria dep. Glasgow 11/10/1865 to Port Chalmers NZ 6 Jan 1866. Margaret, Elizabeth, Williamina* Charles, James* Mary Was there anyone accompanying them as they would be quite young? Gadget I have been away for 2 days sorry for slow response. In answer to your Q? I am unable to tell the debtors list gives only names!! no ages no anything! Vic Ps Have read wendys replies the plot thickens!!!! If family was still in Scotland in 1871 then I can forget the "Paria" listing ta Vic

Wendy Lovely to hear from you, I won't tell my husband that I spent the whole day searching shipping lists for nothin' & that I am back to square 1 Ok from what you have found I am going to work along the lines that Williamina left circ 1871-1878 yeh! only 7 years of ships to pound through! I still need to to positively substantiate that I have the correct family. Something niggles me about her mother being stated as "Annie". So I will still do some searching for an Annie! & a William who had a Williamina. This has helped me heaps in the meantime. thankyou for your effort, I wish I had access to the sources from over here as easily as you do. cheers from oz Vic
