I am trying to trace my family, some of whom I believe came from this area, then moved to Leicester, this would be in the 1850s possibly.

My fathers name was Thomas Herbert Plater, born at 11/2 Victoria street Blaby, Leicester on March 19th, 1918. Yes, that is one and one half!!. His father was also Thomas Herbert, mothers name Annie Abigail, nee Towers.

If you havent got the Plater / Towers marriage cert, then order a copy to reveal Thomas' fathers name, and then we can dig into the census years with more confidence ..
Marriages Jun 1914 PLATER Thomas Leicester Vol 7a Page 586 to Towers Abigail A
obviously they were alive in 1901, but a quick look isnt showing a Thomas Plater in the Leics area .....
also cant see a Thomas H[erbert] Birth Index entry as far back as 1871 anywhere ?
so most likely this chap - only one in Leicester, wonder where he was in 1901 (mistranscribed )
Births Mar 1886 PLATER Thomas Leicester v7a p208

keep this on the back burner to compare with Cert results ..
1891 - RG12/2495; Folio 115; Page 34 - Humberstone, Billesdon area, Leics 9, Eastbourse Road ? Alfred Plater 45 Head Shoe Rivetter Albury BK* ? Hannah Plater 42 Wife Leics, Leicester Alfred Plater 16 Annie Plater 11 Harriet Plater 9 Ada Plater 8 Thomas Plater 5 son Leicester George Plater 3 Elizabeth Plater 1
* I wonder if the enumerator got this wrong - the BK in heavy added letters could be Buckinghamshire ?
And if its acytually Aylesbury, theres an Alfred Plater who exactly fits an Aylesbury PoB and DoB age living in Brum with parents in 1851 ....
1851 - HO107/2054; Folio: 34; Page: 8 - Birmingham St Martin Russell Court
Thomas Plater 34 Head Labourer Aylesbury Harriett Plater 32 Wife Oxon, Bicester Mary Ann Plater 10 dau Aylesbury Henry Plater 8 son do Alfred Plater 5 son do

1881 seems to confirm - you can see this on the Family Search (LDS) website
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Home/Welcome/welcome.asp
RG11 Piece 3167 Folio 110 Page 25 - Leicester St Margaret 160 Dorset St
Alfred is a Shoemaker from Aylesbury, Bucks...
anyway, you do need that marriage Cert to confirm that Thomas' father was Alfred.

Pity you didnt mention that earlier !
There is the 1841 census which may reveal an earlier generation and then its Parish Register research .... which can only be done partially online.
Would you like me to look at 1841 ?

1841 - HO107/62/2; Aylesbury; District: 3; Folio: 19; Page: 32 'Hale Leys'
All shown as born in County... contradicts Harriets detail in 1851
Thomas Plater 24 Ostler Harriett Plater 20 Mary Anna Plater 8 Mo
You now need to research parish registers for baptisms etc to go back further generations ....
