My great-great-grandmother Ann Bowden was born in 1834 in Tinure, Co Louth. Her parents James Boden and Ann O'Neill married in Tinure in the parish of Mullary in 1815. I can find no record of their births (about 1795) or who their parents were.
My great-great-grandmother Ann Bowden first married in Dublin in 1847. Since she left home and married very early, I'm assuming that her father had died. There is a James Boden buried at Monasterboice, but I don't know the details on the headstone. There is also a James Bowden buried in Newtownstalaban (there is also an Anne Bowden buried there, which might have been his wife).
I also note on the County Louth Flax Growers list of 1796 a Matthew Boadin of Mullery and an Owen O'Neill of Mullery. These are the correct surnames at the correct place, but are they the fathers of James Bowden and Ann O'Neill?

Civil registration of births in Ireland started in 1864. For earlier dates there may or may not be church baptism records.
There could have been many reasons for Ann Bowden leaving 'home'- Co. Louth- to go to Dublin besides the death of her father. She could have gone their to work, stay with relatives or the whole family could have moved to Dublin or it could be that she went to Dublin to get married and hadn't been living there previously.
There's no way to tell if the people listed in the Flax Growers list are related.

The gravestone inscriptions are as follows: (Newtownstalaban) BOWDEN - "Erected by Richard Bowden in memory of his Grandfather, James Bowden of Newtown Stalaban who departed this life 4th March 1855 and his ancestors whose remains are interred here since the year A.D. 1630. Also the remains of his father, Thomas Bowden, master of the S.S. Granuaile, who died at sea 15th April 1847. His brother Nicholas who died 29th October 1874, his son John who died young. Also his mother, Anne, relic f the above Thomas Bowden, who departed this life 25th March, 1898." Inverted on this stone is the following: "Sacred to the memory of Rev. Nicholas Bowden of the Franciscan Order, son of the above James Bowden who departed this life 2nd Jan. 1849, in the 27th yar of his age."
(Monasterboice) BODEN - Erected by Alice Boden in memory of her father and mother, James and Anne Brady
Hope that is of some assistance.
Brendan

Brendan,
You have very kindly told me about the inscription for James Boden in Monasterboice. Can I be so bold as to ask whether you can do the same for all Bodens buried at Monasterboice:
Alice Boden Catherine Boden Edward Boden John Boden Mary Boden Mary Boden Patrick Boden Patrick Boden Patrick Boden [sen]
I would be ever so much obliged, Simon

There's only one other Boden Inscription in Monasterboice: BODEN - "Erected by John Boden, Monasterboice in memory of his mother, Mary, 8th August, 1894. Also his sister, Catherine, 27th April 1900. Also, the above John Boden, who died, Aug., 14th 1916. His brother, Edward, 5th April 1930. His nephew, Patrick, 7th April 1932."
In a McDONNELL grave there is the following: McDONNELL: Julia McDonnell, Patrick St., Drogheda, who died 23rd Sept., 1961. Her brother, Patrick Boden who died 8th August., 1957, and their parents, Patrick and Mary Boden, Kearneystown, Dunleer, 6th April 1918 and 3rd Oct., 1921, respectively.

Thanks again Brendan. I can use this information to rule out certain possibilities.
Yours sincerely, Simon

I can't find any burial records for my Boden (Bowden) ancestors in Louth:
James Boden born about 1795 Anne Boden (nee O'Neill) born about 1795 Patrick Boden born in 1819 in Red Gap, Bawntaaffe James Boden born in 1830 in Red Gap, Bawntaaffe
Might their records be contained in a document in Dublin or Belfast?

If they were lucky, and survived after 1864, then their deaths should be recorded with the Register of Births, Marriages and Deaths in Dublin. The death certificates would be available there.

If Brendan's records are from gravestone inscriptions it could be that other Bodens didn't have a headstone but could still be buried in the area. If the graveyard is attached to a church it might have a burial register (might only list name, age, place and date of burial).
