Census CDs and Name Indexes
« on: Friday 28 January 05 14:26 GMT (UK) »

I've been searching myself silly today trying to find information on Census CDs and name indexes for censuses and so far I'm not having much luck! Sad  I'm primarily interested in the Northumberland area, along with Durham, Devon (I have the 1851/61 CDs, 61 isn't searchable by name though) and Gloucestershire.  I also already have the 1881 Census CDs.

Does anyone know where I can find/buy/search the 1841/1851/1861/1871 censuses by NAME rather than address please?  I don't mind paying for them if they're searchable by name, or if someone is planning on releasing a name index in the near future.  I just don't have the time to go through every census image trying to find my ancestors!

Any help would be very much appreciated! Cheesy

Robyn.

Wow, thanks Helen! Cheesy  I'll go surfing shortly and see what I can find.  I didn't think the NDFHS had name indexes but it's been a while since I looked at what they have.  I've been meaning to join for over a year, I guess now's the time! Wink

Thanks again Helen! Cheesy

Helen,

This info does not neccessarily help if you are not in north-east England.

As far as C1851 goes, we have to be grateful to the Northumberland and Durham Family History Society for their labour of transcribing census pages into Surname Indexes( in alpha order) over a period of several years.

My local library at Blyth, Northumberland ( 35 thou , population) has the following available for me and my like......

...about 50 individual booklets on specific census/parish areas for Northumberland ( and one for County Durham).

.. sets of microfiches holding the same for about 60 areas.

.. microfilm of census pages for about 40 areas.

So if you are looking for someone, and you have no idea where there were in Northumberland... you would start at the beginning and work your way through to the end, hoping to pick up what you want , sooner rather than later.

If you knew where they were, then you would choose that specific  index and look for the surname in alpha order

Once you get a hit, you would note the "Piece" and
"Folio" numbers, to enable you to quickly access the appropriate census page to see the whole picture of your "target".

Seeing the census page is wise as the Alpha Surname Indexes contain varying amounts of info....

ie some Newcastle indexes do not show, addresses, relationships, occupations or place of birth,
While other indexes show the lot.

But no index can tell you of other people , living in the same household, who have a different surname from the head of the household.

Newcastle City Library has a wider range of Indexes, covering most parts of the northern part of (old) County Durham, as well as Northumberland.

Darlington Library has over 100 Index books, covering the southern parts of Co Durham and bits of (old) Yorkshire North Riding.

And it will be a similar story in many other libraries and record offices.

I do not know of actual Indexes on line, except for parts of Westgate, Newcastle.

Gidday stranger!!!! Cheesy  I haven't heard from you for a while Mick so it's nice to see you posting to MY query! Grin  After reading your post I'm thinking I should've posted the census information I was given, maybe someone has access to it and can provide me with ALL the information, so I'll paste it below.  I'm not 100% sure of details but I think it's from the 1851 in Northumberland.  It makes sense cause this is John ARMSTRONG and Dorothy WAUGH I'm talking about here Mick.  No, I still haven't found them ... sigh!!

I DID, however, manage to find more children for Thomas ARMSTRONG and Esther STOBART, John's parents.  I'll have to email that to you direct, so you know where I am with this family.  I put them on the backburner when we couldn't find John and Dorothy's marriage in Gretna Green, I've only just picked it up again.  'Tis time I found answers and put this one to rest so I can get on with my Scottish lines! Grin

Here's the information I received from a lady in Australia, it IS the 1851 ...

"I decided to check some NBL 1851 census indexes on fiche, and found...

ARMSTRONG John 29, Dorothy 28, Thos 2, Elizabeth 2
folio 23, census piece   HO107/2416"

Maybe someone who's reading this will have access to the 1851 and be able to send me a copy of the image?  Here's hoping anyway! Cheesy

Take care,

Rob.

Hi Michael

Robyn did seem to be asking for information about where Census Indexes for Northumberland and Durham could be bought.

I just gave her a few sites to search where she might find her area and year of interest.  I don't agree this may not be useful as these Index booklets are available by post.

Helen K,

When I wrote .... " this info does not necessarily help....", I was certainly not referring to your information. I was referring to the information I was providing,  about local libraries in this area, which Robyn from overseas could not visit.

Helen K,

Rereading my bit, I can see how you might have thought I was referring to previous posts. I should have been more specific about " this info".

No prob's Michael.

Interesting stuff about Blyth library holdings - didn't know about that.

I've interests in Morpeth, but have tended to use Bolbec and Newcastle library - you never know, we might meet there someday!!!

Michael

Intersted in Blyth, I don't suppose the Library holds birth details, looking for parent details for a lady born in 1811.

I could stop off next time I'm up that way if they have something.

Thx

Dave,

Blyth Library has no church records of BMDs. It has an assortment of Censuses, mainly for the Blyth area. But it has a good selection of C1851 surname indexes for most of old Northumberland. Other "pearls" are Indexes on Ship Owners and Master Mariners, registered on the Tyne, Indexes of Coal Mine owners, Marriage Index for all-Northumberland 1813-1837, Tynemouth Workhouse Registers etc etc.

Church registers for Blyth area are available in Northumberland County Record Office ( Morpeth), and partially in Newcastle City Library and Tyne&Wear County Archives Services( Blandford House, Newcastle , and probably other places, including the appropriate churches.
