Has anyone installed this and what do you think of it? I loaded it this morning and although I miss the familiar Internet Explorer layout I'm finding it much quicker than IE.

I've tried it on two machines - one using Norton and the other McAfee, working fine on both. Seems noticeably faster even than Firefox.
The only disadvantage that I see so far is that there is no Ad-blocking feature - which I have in Firefox using an add-ion.

Just to bring in another aspect of the question that I think is relevant to most of us on Rootschat: The biggest disadvantage to Chrome is Google itself. And forget security. In its rush to turn everything Internet into a moneymaking proposition, Google compromises negates the notion of privacy. Everything one enters into Google and now Chrome gets saved on servers, possibly forever. Google crunches the data and users are left wondering why they are looking at ads that seem a little too personal.
Google also has compromised Firefox by entering into an agreement with Mozilla that gives Google an advantageous position on Firefox. From Wikipedia: Mozilla has an agreement with Google to "make Google search the default in the Firefox browser search bar and hence send it search referrals; a Firefox themed Google search site has also been made the default home page of Firefox." According to a source cited on Wikipedia, about 85% of Mozilla’s revenue for 2006--$56 million--came from the agreement.
Yahoo is no better on the ad placement; sometimes it's just plain dumb. Yesterday on a story about a shooting "rampage" in Washington State in the U.S., Yahoo placed an ad for Rampage perfume.
But Microsoft doesn't have a halo as part of its logo. It's anticompetitive behavior is as bad as or worse than its bedfellows'. But apparently Internet Explorer 8 will have have some anonymizing abilities when it comes to search, meaning, of course, Google will be excluded.
It seems best to play the middle. Choose your devil carefully. None of these companies are interested in either ethics or privacy. To paraphrase the adage: There's no such thing as a free search.
Having pontificated enough, I thank you for reading. It will soon be Christmas, and we'll be signing off with Dickens. "And God bless us every one."
Regards, John

The discussion about browsers came up yesterday with my dad and OH, I'm one of few who have (need) to use all current browsers due to my web programming and hosting of multiple sites. The only browser I go back to for regular use (rather than using for test/development purposes) is IE. I've never found a problem with it - maybe I've just been lucky =)

I've downloaded Google Chrome - using it now - and I have to say that I really like it, and it's faster than Firefox.
I particularly like the layout of the page - just the tab and search bar at the top - which allows for lots of spare screen for viewing web pages.
All in all, pretty good!!

I'm not trying Chrome, having read an article about potential loss of ownership of any material you transmit through it. A condition in the licence agreement implies that if (for example) you upload your family tree, with sources and photos to a website using the Chrome browser, Google then have the right to use and distribute that material as they see fit. You may want to bear that in mind.
I'll try and find the article again and link to it.

Edit: The Guardian has an article on this issue at http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/digitalcontent/2008/09/googles_chrome_loses_its_shine.html. In case anyone can't access this, the relevant wording is:
11.1 You retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. By submitting, posting or displaying the content you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services. This license is for the sole purpose of enabling Google to display, distribute and promote the Services and may be revoked for certain Services as defined in the Additional Terms of those Services
Chrome may be fast, but speed isn't everything! My research and information IS

I think I'll leave the domination of the planet to Microsoft, and stick with IE7. At least Bill Gates does some good things with his money - what do I know about the faceless folk at Google ?

Strange ? Without Googling, how many here can tell me who owns Google ? At least I know the man behind Microsoft.
