Hi All
Interesting Reports found on Boatmen
Birmingham Daily Post Sat March 19th 1881 Obstructing the Birmingham Canal At Walsall Guildhall, yesterday, John and William Godfrey and William Mountney, Boatmen, Birmingham, were summond, at te instance of the Birmingham Canal Co. for having obstructed the canal. The testimony of several witnesses went to show that on the night of the 1oth inst, the defendents went to the Top Locks, Birchills, with a boat, and owing to a dispute as to who should be incharge of it, John refused to produce the ticket to the Lockkeeper who would not let the boat past till he got it, and the boat stayed in the lock for six hours and detained twenty boats. - John was fined 10s and costs, or 14 days imprisonment, and the other two 20s and costs, or one months imprisonment.
