St. Just baptism records for TREMBATH
« on: Friday 05 September 08 10:45 UTC (UK) »

I need help finding the baptism records for GILES TREMBATH (maybe Jesse Trembath).  I have a marriage for Giles Trembath marrying Ann AIRS (Ayres)24.05.1800.  After this date, there are some birth records for children - some have parents Giles and Ann and some have parents Jesse and Ann.  The babies all follow on as if they are the one family.

However I cannot find a birth for either Giles or Jesse Trembath.  Probably born 1775/80 in St. Just.  Marriage banns say of this parish.

I have had Film 1596685 for St. Just out, but baptisms for that period were missing.  I was wondering if anyone has access to any other films which might show him.  I couldn't find him on IGI.  I couldn't find Ann Airs either.

Thank you

I too am interested in Trembath - Loveday Trembath to be exact. According to several member-submitted entries, she appears to have been bap on
17 Jun 1787, daughter of William T and Ann Champion. I cannot find any official record to say that she is the same Loveday who married Peter Harvey Rowe b 1789 in Paul, Cornwall, son of Peter Rowe and Marjory Harvey.  There are several Loveday Trembaths in the registers but she is the only one of the right age to be Peter Rowe's wife. Can anyone help with this family please?

Thanks for this information.   I guess the only way I can prove that this is the correct Loveday is to find her as Loveday Rowe in the census. I will try to investigate that angle.
Thanks again,

Thanks for this. I had been looking for his death. Last child was baptised in 1823 but I guess Lovey could have been pregnant when he diedd, or waited to have the baby baptised.  The combination of names makes me pretty sure it's the right one.

Thanks again, Marie

Hi Fizzy,
Did you have any further info on the death you found for Peter harvey Rowe please? I looked up the Paul burials for 1822 but could find only a baby Peter Harry Rowe bur in Mar that year.
Any help appreciated.

OK.

It would seem that the family relocated to Portsea where Peter Harvey Rowe was baptised in 1816.

If you go to FreeBMD and put in Peter Rowe Portsea, you will see that the elder Peter died there in 1837.

You wanted proof that the Loveday who married Peter Rowe was the one bap in 1787, well her death is also recorded as at Portsea in 1870 aged 82. If you go to the 1861 census, she is living with her daughter Ann Potts and her birthplace is given as St Just.

Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou! Your kindness is much appreciated.
The Peter Harvey Rowe bap in 1816 came to Australia and is my husband's ancestor. Was he born in Portsea or in Cornwall? I have his birth year as 1814 but no location.

His baptism is Portsea but he may well have been born in Cornwall. Cant give you a definite answer on that I am afraid. You will have to find him in a census.......

Curiouser and curiouser!  Just located a copy of Peter Rowe Jnr's marriage cert. Says he was born in Portsmouth and was 37 in 1862 making birth year 1825. However, I suspect he was putting his age down as his bride was 18!  Is Portsmouth close to Portsea?

The real riddle is that he lists his parents as Peter Rowe, mast maker  and LOUISA LEWISS not Loveday Trembath. Did his dad have an affair?   Strangely he named his second daughter Sarah jane LOVEY Rowe . None of his 4 daughters is named Louisa~~

I shall try to order his death certificate and see what it says, though I know how unreliable they can be too!
Once again, thanks for your interest.

Yes Portsmouth and Portsea are close by.

Loveday is very much a Cornish name which many people out of the county dont seem to grasp the hang of when spelling it.

I have noticed the spelling as Lovey in several of the grandchildren.

When did Peter Harvey Rowe come to Australia ?

Very strange that he should name his mother as Louisa Lewes. He either didnt know his mothers name he was illegitimate or the clerk scribbled it on a piece of paper for later entry to the register and copied it incorrectly somehow. Can you find out who this Louisa was ?

PS if he named his mother as Louisa what made you look for Loveday Trembath ?

My husband's grandmother, daughter of Sarah jane  Lovey rowe, kept the family history info and passed it on to her daughter and grandchildren when she died. She always maintained that Peter's parents were Peter  and Lovey or Loveday Rowe, so I went looking for a Peter married to a Loveday and came up with the  Trembath connection.  Peter senior's parents were Richard Rowe and Margery Harvey, which explained Peter's middle name, so it all fell into place.

Peter Rowe came to Australia about 1862 and marrid Elizabeth Wallace the same year.  He became quite famous as Bosun on a sailing ship which was sent from Melbourne to the Gulf of Carpentaria (extreme north of Australia) to search for the famous explorers Burke and Wills who had disappeared after trying to walk the continent from south to north.  There is quite a bit of info about him in the Melbourne Museum.

I was able to download PHR's death information from the Vic GoVt BDMs today and they pose even more problems and answer a question. His age given at marriage was 49, much closer to the truth than the 37 he stated on the day. His parents are named as Peter Rowe and Lovey HARVEY!  I presume this is just a case of the informant being confused and giving his grandmotther's maiden name instead of his mother's maiden name.

I cannot even begin to think where the Louisa lewiss name comes from. Was she Peter senior's mistress and the child was brought up by Peter's wife?  We may never know. I am just recording the fact in notes connected to his file, but listing his mother as Loveday Trembath at this stage.  What do you think?
