Where is Loop-in-the-Lane?
« on: Friday 05 September 08 20:21 UTC (UK) »

Found this written in Winlaton St Paul's Burial Register for 1835 as the abode of one William Biggins.  Anyone have any idea as to where it referred to?

Hi

According to the 1841 description it was in Winlaton, ED 3:

"..........village of Blaydon from thence up Blaydon Bank Loop in the Lane and Quarry Houses to the junction of the road to Fenwicks Mill........."

Just Googled and found property for sale at Quarry House and Blaydon Bank!

Here's a map link:

I think I've found the exact location on the old maps on which it is called 'The Loup'

Go to this site http://www.durham.gov.uk/durhamcc/usp.nsf/pws/GIS+-+Online+Mapping and click on 'launch the GIS now'
When it has loaded, click on search, and enter the postcode NE21 4BD.
When the present-day map has loaded, go to the drop-down menu at the bottom of the page and select 1856 - 1865 or 1894 - 1899. Both of these show 'The Loup'.
You can zoom out by using the '-' button at the bottom of the map.

Hi

I think it may be the location of 'Loup Farm', a housing development which was built there in the 60's.
