Trying to Go Back Further Than 1801- james reid
« on: Saturday 06 September 08 18:44 UTC (UK) »

HI I am new to this site so a bit stuck, help please,

I have traced our family back to a JAMES REID born 1801 he married a MARY SHEIL 0n 24th March 1824 in KELSO Scotland at the time he was the School Master, his parents are not listed but the wedding registered says they are both from this Parish..

In the 1841 Scottish Census he and his wife and 7 children - thomas 1825, anthony 1826, james 1828,  william 1832, john 1834, lyle 1836 (our line) and jane 1838 - were living in The School House in Beith. Lyle goes on to have a son Kenneth - born in dundee 4th march 1873 - with wife Magaret Henderson who he married in dundee.

Can anyone please help trace James Reid  and Mary Sheil in Kelso 1801 thanks thanks

Hi,

A possible christening for Mary:
Mary Sheils 23 Dec 1798 Kelso parents: Anthony & Jean (nee Holme)

This would also fit with them having a son Anthony.

Are the birth years from 1841 census?

Regards, chesters

Hi Angela and Chesters

Welcome to RootsChat Angela  Smiley

I think Chesters' birth entry for Jane looks to be spot on going by the second names used for their children. From IGI at www.familysearch.org (free to search/use):

1. THOMAS REID Christening: 11 AUG 1824 Kelso, Roxburgh
2. ANTHONY SHIELL REID  -Christening: 22 OCT 1826 Kelso, Roxburgh
3. JAMES REID Christening: 12 APR 1829 Kelso, Roxburgh - married Jane SHIELL on 18 SEP 1855 in Edinburgh (submitted info)
4. JANE HOLMES SHIELL REID Christening: 30 SEP 1831 Beith, Ayr
5. WILLIAM SHIEL REID Christening: 18 JUN 1833 Beith
6. JOHN REID Christening: 03 MAY 1835 Beith, Ayr
7. LYLE REID Christening: 18 SEP 1836 Beith, Ayr
8. JANE HOLMES SHIELL REID Christening: 29 JUL 1838 Beith, Ayr

Entries above are mostly actual extract from the Old Parish Registers, some submitted entries.

With James Reid Snr's early death, hard to say where in Scotland he was from. There is only one daughter showing for them, and she looks to have been named after her maternal grandmother. At best guess, I would say Thomas for James Reid's father, as first born showing.

You might get some additional clues regarding James Snr. from his inventory following his death:

James Reid, 29/04/1846,   Teacher and Parochial Schoolmaster of Beith - Inventory at Ayr Sheriff Court Inventories - GROS REf: SC6/44/14

Smiley wow you guys are great,   chesters  the date's I used were age at last birthday on the 1841 census, so they were a bit vague and MonicaLesl look to be far more acurate, thanks Piglet01  for the line's regarding James Reid snr being elected. Now will look on Scotland People for any further info.
Thanks Thanks  Smiley

Angela

Bear in mind with the 1841 census only that ages were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5 years for everyone over 15, children below this age were supposed to show at their actual age. So, someone showing a birth year of 1801 in 1841 could have been born 1797-1801.

Good luck with your research  Smiley

Wink thanks for that, i didn't know that as only started looking into this recently after finding family papers that had been put away.
have found references to his grandson Kenneth Lyle Reid in Scottish Episcopal Cergy Records, and St Andrew University Matriculation Records.

Smiley :)hi  Beckey Reid's of that time if james had any siblings?, his birth? i still can't find anything else about them,
to monica, thanks for the heads up on his will i did look it up but not a great deal of info other than who owed him money!  and that he travelled between Beith and Edinburgh, but i am still digging!!
thanks for all the help so far this started as a quest to join the dots with the Robertson Reid clan but that has been through a great aunt's sister so very vauge, but the pure Reid line it proving very interesting.

Mmmm...trying to think where you could try next to find out more about James Reid's origins. Pity there was nothing more revealing on his will, but his connections to Edinburgh would explain why his children were living there in 1851 with their mother's sister.

I wonder if there would be anything written about his appointment on the Kirk Sessions of the Parochial Board. From Steve's link, he was appointed as school teacher in May 1832.  Maybe just a chance that the minutes of the Sessions would say the Board has appointed James Reid from....and something on his background (I am always hopeful  Roll Eyes)

I found this link which I thought you might find interesting from the Pigots Ayrshire Directory 1837:

www.maybole.org/history/Archives/1837directory/beith.htm

James Reid is mentioned under the section ACADEMIES & SCHOOLS
