My grandfather, Daniel McGonigle, born in Bayonne, New Jersey is the son of Dan Andy McGonigle (McGonagle) of Owey. On his brother's baptismal certificate his godparents were William McDevitt and Maggie McDevitt. They had to also be Owey Islanders.

Hello Board,
Well how lovely, after so many years, to see other people researching the surname McDevitt,, I have an ancestor, Catherine Malone who married one John McDevitt, his army papers says he came from Raffee Donegal, after much digging we came up with Raphoe, so I hope I am in the right area.
John joined the British army in 1820, aged 20, served for approx 23 yrs, ending his time in the army 1838, discharged in Tasmania,
On John's enlistement papers it says his trade was a Miner, he was aged 18 yrs 6 months, which has him born abt Dec 1800..he has the following children,, Mary, Catherine, Ellen, John and possibly William. One would think they would be family names, but of course they could be from Catherines side of the family.
I did find an Andrew McDevitt who was in the 76th Foot Regt born Roffee, Donegal, discharged aged 21 after five yrs service 1805.
I have to wonder if John and Andrew are related, no proof of course.
If anyone has seen either of these gentlemens names or rather anyone who may fit the profile could you please email me, that would be wonderful.
Thank you for your time. Regards From Australia Mae Bone

A Shearlais,
The original McDevitt came from Glenties. He had a relationship with a McGonigle woman from the island. I can let you have the family genealogy down to the 1950/60s if you email me offline.
Cheers
Dan

I have a Jane (Mary Jane) McDevitt who was born in Raphoe c 1825. Her parents were James McDevitt and Margaret Porter. Jane came to Australia as an assisted migrant in 1844. She was travelling under the protection of Andrew Wilson and his family who were also from Raphoe. Jane was an Episcopalian and could read and write. Any information appreciated. Regards Caimein Australia

Click here to see the 1901 Census Owey Island, Templecrone which lists both McGonagles and McDevitts.
Both names also appear on the 1911 Census.
Andy McGonagle is mentioned by Moville man Donal MacPolin who is the author of a new book "The Donegal Curraghs" which is about the fascinating and ancient history of the Donegal curragh. His book was launched in Dunlewey on Saturday 13th October this year.

Welcome to Rootschat Clarabelle. It would help others if you could give more details about the people you are looking for- any idea of dates? do you know the names of Bridget's parents? Did Bridget get married in Scotland or Ireland? Scotland's People website will list the marriage if in Scotland but if it's too recent then it will not be available online. That's why it's important to give us as much detail as you know so we can help you.

I too am related to Daniel "O" Donnel. My father was Charles McDevitt, who"s mother was Mary Sharkey, sister of Julia"s mother. My father and Julia were first cousins, so Daniel and I are cousins too. My brothers son who is also called Charles McDevit goes over regulary to Owey Island where my father lived next door to Julia Although the island is now deserted he likes to take pictures, When I was young I loved going on holiday, when my father went over to thatch his mothers roof The last time my father was over he had a heart atack and died there, and his cousin Julia organised the sending back of his remains to be buried with my mother in Scotland Hoping you hear from others,
Yours sinderely May Lacon(nee.) McDevitt.

Someone called Clarabelle, was asking about Bridget McDevitt married to Pat Devlin. We may be cousins. as My father Charles McDevitt had an older sister called Bridget who maried Paddy Devlin. They lived in Townhead Glasgow Scotland, and my aunt Brigcet used to come and visit us every week until she died in childbirth.Paddy Devlin married straight away. Although my father never bothered with Paddy Devlin again he went to great lenghths to lok after his sisters family who were a credit to their mother.
If you think we are related you can e-mail me at; (*) Yours sincerely
May Lacon (nee) McDevitt
