Thank you for getting back to me. If you are Aunt Bridgets grandchild thwn are you Rita or May"s child. Julia O Donnel wrote a book about the Island , and your grandmothers name is mentioned, along with her btothers and sister. I have loaned the book out but as soon as I get it back I will give you the name of it. She describes life on the Island perfectly. Are you in touch with your other Aunt and uncles? You will find you have a lot of relatives in the Glasgow area. I no longer live in Scotland so I have lost touch with most of them. The last time I saw May Devlin (either your mother or your aunt)  My son has gone and got my book back now. The book is called  "JULIA O DONNELL A MOTHERS STORY  A STORY OF HARDSHIP AND LOVE FROM THE MOTHER OF DANIEL O DONNELL" Here is the quote she makes when talking about  her mother,  "she did a lot of sewing for people on Owey, particular for our cousins  THE MCDEVIT  family who were very close to us . There were 6 children in that family --DOMINIC , EDWARD, CHARLIE, ( my father)   WILLIE , BRIDGET , and MARY . For some reason she has missed out OWENY  who was the brother born before my dad.  It is OWENY"S family that is scatered around GLASGOW. If you ask in your local library they may order a copy for you.  Please get back to me and let me know whos daughter/son you are!

Good luck

I have just posted a reply to you  and was called away in the middle of it and made an eror. I started to say that the last time I saw May Devlin was at our mutual AUNTS funeral  at North Quensfery in Fife. This was Aunt Mary and she died 17th February 1981. Aunt Mary"s daughter was there "MINNIE" and her husband Barnie Coyle . At that time they were living in Lincoln.

I did go to Owey a lot when I was little before my mother died.  But she died when I was 10yrs. and I think I only went once after that with my dad. It is a curious thing about the names over in the island.  Although the name Sharkey is used  I think that your great grandmothers maiden name was McGonigle ( she was my grandmother) but because there was so many McGonigles of the same name they calledsome of them by their mothers maiden . So Julias mother and my grandmother being sisters and their name being McGonigle to distinguish them from the others , they were called by their mothers maiden name which was Sharkey. I have details of the census that was done in  nineteen eleven, and it is as follows ----------

CHARLES  MCDEVITT    aged 45,

Wife  MARY MC DEVITT   aged  38

                                             CHILDREN

DOMMINICK    aged  10

EDWARD          aged  8

BRIDGET          aged   7

OWENY            aged   5

CHARLES         aged 4    my father

WILLIAM          aged   5 months

Daughter Mary was not born .

Will get back to you sometime

                                       MAY
