i have received a hint through ancestry ona josephhurley born abt 1881 stockport, cheshire., england. I have him on the 1901 U.K. census living in Oldham, lancashire england with his sister and his uncle and his family. Josephs parents were thomas hurley and ellen formerley foy. any help appreciated. kind regards belinda

You don't mention when Joseph might have gone to America or where he might have lived. Have you checked index (free) at Find My Past to see if there's a record of him leaving the U.K.?- it should give post of arrival and year. If he arrived in New York 1892-1924 you can look for passenger manifest on www.ellisisland.org (be sure to look at both pages of scanned images to see where he was supposed to be going).
There is a Joseph Hurley, b. 1882, in England, in the 1920 census.
rented home at 450 West 58th St., Manhattan, NY, NY. age 38; married; born in England, parents born in England; [apparently naturalized but hard to read]: superintendent of a loft building; with wife Emma A, [age 19, b. Brooklyn, NY] and children Alvin [3], Edward [1 7/12] and Grace [4/12].
