Perthshire Death Records
« on: Monday 08 September 08 20:10 UTC (UK) »

Are there any pre 1855 Death Records for Monzievaird available? And if there are, where can I get them.  I have ancestors who lived in the Monzievaird & Strowan area in the 18th century and early 19th century.

Maybe I'll be corrected.  Probably!!
I don't have any local knowledge but was interested in your post because I've found a remote link in my family to the area - very remote.
Anyway maple, according to the following link*,  Monzievaird & Strowan only existed from 1845.
That kinda narrows down your search to the 19th C?

Having said that, there are a number of references on Google that predate 1845?

There's got to be someone on RC that has MI's for the area?

Dave

Hi

The Pre-1855 MI's for Monzievaird & Strowan are published in South Perthshire MI's pre 1855 Volumn 2 and the parish of Monzievaird dates back to the early 17th century

Hi  Both  Smiley

According to the GROS listing, burial records exist for Monzievaird for 1729-1819 (383/1) and 1820-1854(383/3) :

http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/files1/family-records/list-of-oprs-323to398.pdf

These can probably be ordered from your local LDS Centre (see www.familysearch.org for details). Also the Crieff Office appear to hold them:

Hi Everybody,

Thank you for your interest and help. Smiley
I am researching a multi GGrandfather named William Kay.  He is listed on the 1851 census as living in Stirlingshire and born in Monievaird in 1770.  I am assuming that Monievaird is Monzievaird.
William Kay is not listed on the 1861 census, so I am assuming that he died between 1851 and 1855, since I cannot find a record of his death.  If only he had held out for a few more years! Angry

I cannot find a record of a William Kay born in Monievaird or Monzievaird for 1770.
But there is a Willam Key and an Ann Key (twins) born in Monzievaird in 1768 to a William Key and Catherine Malish.  My William Kay's second oldest daughter is named Catherine, so it is possible that that these are my William Kay's parents. I realize that I am grasping at straws, and there is no relationship at all.

There is also a record of an Ann Key marrying a Patrick Drummond in Monzievaird in 1794.  (Drummond is a sir name that pops up in a later generation)

I would like to find any kind of Death record for William Key, possibly born about 1740 and his wife Catherine Malish, born 1749 in Monzievaird, Perthshire.
I would also like to find a Death Record for Ann Key and her husband Patrick Drummond.

Andy, I believe that Kay/Key are common names in Perth.  I would be grateful if you could look up those names for me.  I will probably buy the book to look for others that may be related.

Thank you so much

Hi Excel,

Thank you for looking.  Were these MIs or burial records?  So far I haven't found any evidence of deaths for any of my relatives pre 1855.
Either they are still living or have been abducted by aliens. Wink Cheesy

Hi

I've had a look through the MI's for South Perthshire Vol 2 and there are only a handful of Kay/Key but none are yours.

Is the William Kay living in Denny, Stirllingshire in 1851 census with daughters Catherine & Elizabeth yours? if so, was Margaret his wife? In the 1841 census, also in Denny,  there is a Margaret Kay age 65 born Stirlingshire. Perhaps Denny would be the best place to look for Williams burial.

Hi Andy

Thank you for looking, but I suspected as much.

Yes, the William Kay, living in Denny, Stirlingshire,  with daughters Catherine and Elizabeth in the 1851 Census is mine.  Wife Margaret is likely dead by that time.
William Kay, his wife, Margaret Watson, with their daughters Catherine and Elizabeth are there in the 1841 Census for Denny, along with married daughter Margaret Kay McDonald and granddaughter Christen, who were visiting. Margaret McDonald is my direct ancestor.

There are no MI's for William Kay or Margaret Watson Kay for Denny, Stirlingshire.   :(They probably weren't rich enough to afford any kind of monument.

How I wish that deaths were recorded prior to 1855!

Thanks again for taking the time out to look them up for me.

Maple
Have you looked up these folk under the name Keay, rather than Kay/Key?
That's a pretty common spelling of the name in Perthshire & Fifeshire - my branch were from Perth, then Comrie.

Regards, Lisa (nee Keay!)

Hi Lisa

That is a great idea.  Smiley I never thought to look them up under Keay.  I will try looking them up under that name.  I have nothing to lose.  They might also have gone to Fifeshire too!

Thank you for your interest.

How about contacting the Tay Valley Family History Society for a small consideration they'd do a look up for you if your not local to Dundee and can't get there readily.
You might also try the AK Bell library in Perth I've always found them very helpful and have a good genealogy section.

Hi Ormazda,

Thank you for your interest.  I am living in California and have to do all of my genealogical research long distance.  I will look up these two groups and see if they can be reached online.

Thanks again Smiley
