Matthew Hislop + Janet Harrower
« on: Tuesday 09 September 08 04:15 UTC (UK) »

I am seeking information about Matthew Hislop and Janet Harrower who married in Alloa parish on 3rd Feb 1818.
I have found a son Matthew Hislop who married Flora McKay in 1848 but would like to know more.

Hi Thommoje

Have you got the family's 1841 entry? Matthew Snr. looks to have been born in England. Children showing as born in the County of Lanarkshire:

Matthew Hyslop 60, nail m.b, b England
Janet Hyslop 50, b. Scotland
John Hyslop 15
Matthew Hyslop 10
Robert Hyslop 5
Jane Hyslop 5

Address: Burnside (west), Glasgow College, Lanarkshire

In 1851, this looks like Matthew Jnr. - everyone showing as born in Glasgow:

Matthew Hislop 23, wood turner, b.
Florance Hislop 21
Catherine Hislop 3
Janet Hislop 6 Months

Address: 76 Havannah St, Glasgow College, Lanarkshire

Possible entry for mother Janet Harrower in 1851:

Janet Hislop 62, b. Alloa
Robt Hislop 17, b. Glasgow
Jean Hislop 14, b. Glasgow

Address:56 Burnside St, Glasgow College, Lanarkshire

Quite a few Janet Harrowers born in Alloa in her time period. Hopefully she lived past 1855 and the start of official reg. so that you can check her death cert. for parents' details.

Thank you Monica,
I had the 1841 Census entry but not the others.
You have given me much more to go on and I will try to find  Janet in the post 1855 death records.
Matthew , the Nailer born in England was born Matthew Heslehurst in Stockton on Tees as was my G G Grandfather Richard Hislop / Heslehurst.
Matthew Jnr married Flora ( Florance ) McKay in 1848. He was killed at work in an accident with a saw at the Victoria Saw Mill , James Street , Dundas ,Glasgow. The rest of the family story that I have found seems to be rather a sad one. I am hoping to find some happy endings for these folk.
                                  Regards, Thommoje ( Jean)

Hi Monica ,
                 I have Flora ( aged 30 ) , Matthew 36 , Janet 10 , William 8 , Jane 5 and William Lindsay 36 ( boarder)  in the 1861 Census in High Church , Glasgow. Detail missing from the top of the census form and I can`t read the dwelling address - 145 --- ------ .
After Matthew`s death in 1870 at the saw mill, Flora eventually married the boarder , William Lindsay in 1876.
She outlived him and died in 1902 in the City Poorhouse in Glasgow. The Assistant Governor of the establishment was the informant. I wonder what became of her children. Daughter Janet married Hector McKinnon and she died in 1879 of TB.
Some of our folk had such tragic lives.

Phew...you're in luck Jean. Janet mother made it past 1855 to 1857!

Janet Hyslop/Harroway (as transc.), mother's name Jamieson, died in 1857 age 65 in High Church. I assume Glasgow College area.

Possible for her birth - only one showing with mother Jamieson, on IGI:

JANET HARROWER  Birth 19 MAR 1791/ Christening on 24 MAR 1791 in Alloa
Parents:JOHN HARROWER and MARGARET JAMESON

Hopefully her DC will confirm parents.

Monica , You are a gem!
It is late here in OZ , so I will purchase some more SP credits tomorrow and check the death record.
On the Lanarkshire board , you can see two recent entries about these two Hesslehurst fellows ( Richard - my G G Grandfather and Matthew) who came to live in Glasgow under the name Hyslop / Hislop.
The marriage for Matthew and Janet in 1818 is registered in Alloa as Hislop and in Glasgow as Hesslehurst. Not sure why that was done but it helped me confirm what they had done in changing their names. I knew of a family story about a name change but had no detail.
Off to bed for me, Thank you , Jean

Good Morning Monica ,
I have looked at the death record for Janet - informant Matthew ( son).
Parents John Harroway and ---- Jamieson. Important piece of info " Widow of a Nailer". She was found dead in her bed - hope it was a peaceful departure.
The Harroway error must have developed within the family over time as when son Matthew`s daughter died in 1879, her husband Hector McKinnon gave the name Harroway as his wife`s maiden name and his father in law also. One might think he would recall marrying a Hyslop.
                                   Thank you once again,

That's great  Cheesy Spelling of surnames at the time were relatively fluid as you have seen with your Hi(y)slop/ Hesslehurst names.

Makes for fun research  Roll Eyes

Just had a thought  Roll Eyes

Have you ever tried to investigate whether Poor Relief Records remain for Flora McKay Hislop including her time at the Poor house. These records, if they still exist, could provide you with a lot of detail that you wouldn't be able to find elsewhere. Glasgow is particularly good for keeping these records historically (many other areas weren't and have destroyed them over the years). I believe these records are kept at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow and require a personal search. Maybe a route to follow up?

Hi Monica ,
That can go on the To Do List.
I will try to find what happened to sons John and Robert from the 1841 Census first.
There is a Photo on " The Glasgow Story " of Burnside Street in the Cowcaddens section. I hope 56 was on the right hand side of the photo.
                       Thank you for your help,

Jean

Possible entry for son John in 1861, married to a Jane Kyle. Everyone born Glasgow:

John Hislop 37, iron dresser
Jane Hislop 34
Matthew Hislop 16
Scott Hislop 13
Marion Hislop 11
John Hislop 2
Marion Waldey 60, mother in law
Jane Hislop 22, visitor, cotton weaver - I wonder is this is sister Jane, if we have the right family

Address: Nelson's Land, Govan Renfrewshire

Hi Monica , That looks interesting.John being an iron dresser would fit well with Matthew being a smith. Richard`s sons were an Iron moulder and two Blacksmiths.I will try to follow them up.
Had visitors yesterday so haven`t had time for searching but did see a Robert Hyslop and wife Christina living in Drygate Street. Richard Hislop / Hesslehurst lived there for a number of years but it might be coincidence.
                 Plenty to keep me busy,

 Hi Monica,
Matthew Hislop( 16 in 1861 Census) was born to John Hislop + Jane Kyle 10 Feb 1845 - Witnesses Scott Waldie and Baird McKay.
Of course , I can`t find any Baird McKay but this does look quite likely as part of Matthew`s family.
Found Flora in the 1841 census .
Widow McKay 55 , Hector 15 a Sharper , William 11 a Foundry apprentice , Flora 10 and Daniel 7 - all born in Glasgow - and they are living in Burnside. Baird and other siblings could have left home as the Mother is 55 - there probably were others.
Getting giddy - need a coffee!
                                                            Jean
